Rep Power: 0 | Demagraphics question Considering opening a tanning salon, I am in the very early stages of research. I have been a lurker on the site for a few days now and I think my city is a little odd. Our population is 60,000 and we have 6 tanning salons. Only 3 are nice salons, the rest are much older, inside hair salons, with poor visibility. By nice I mean freshly painted with new beds, and the only salons that have ever spent any $ on advertising. The 3 salons in the city are in nice re-modeled shopping centers. They seem to do well, I've been doing a little recon and have been tanning at all 3 at various times and have never gotten in and out of there no matter what time I go without seeing other customers come and go . All 3 salons have over 20 beds. I have a few comperable sites picked out and am running some numbers. My question is doesn't a city my size typically have a few more salons? I am in upstate NY and we tend to be a little behind up here. But my city is growing quite a bit. Within the last 2 yrs we have re-developed almost every plaza, gotten wal-mart #2 and about doubled the # of restaraunts and big box stores. Is my city prime for another salon? Oh we have 2 colleges here as well. |

I'd much rather open a salon where other salons are doing very well, says something about the tanning industry here in general. Sort of the best place to put a Mcdonalds is right next to a Burger King theory I guess. |

That you can see "some people coming in and out" of salons that have 20 beds, does NOT mean more beds are needed! It means those salons are probably gripping on by their fingernails! Watch those salons for a YEAR. See not only who comes and goes, but how much they spend. Your town is already oversaturated. Wait for a few of them to fail, and pick up the one with the best location and database for cheap. Maybe -- maybe -- then I would go into tanning in your town. | |

Rep Power: 21 | Re: Demagraphics question Do you have a plan that will make people want to tan at your place rather than the existing places? Are they dirty, or have old equipment, or just treat their customers badly or indifferently? Do you have a good business mind and have run the numbers? If the answer to these questions is yes, then go for it... I did, and continue to do it. Make sure you are well capitalized, because you will do well to break even in the months of July thru Nov. Good luck.

Rep Power: 22 | Re: Demagraphics question I don't think your city is overly saturated with salons. The hair places that have a few beds don't count. So you have 3 actual salons? . If you can find a location next to the college campus and make it a fun, splashy, and colorful salon, your season will be for nine months; not just three or four. You don't have to get into a price war with your comps. either. Keep your prices up there and just run a couple of monthly specials. In every town, you have your bottom feeders. You don't need them, so don't get into a price war. One of the worse things a new salon can do is lower their prices. They are new and fresh and the college crowd likes coming into an exciting atmoshere. I'd say if you can find that certain location, go for it. |
