Points, Sessions, Minutes, ect. What is most successful?

minutess and points. It really depends on your market....and what the people are used to. We're in a small town...and everyone has always been used to minutes....we're slowly introducing them to the points but it's taking some time.

SO far the minutes have been the top seller, I try to push people to go for the mth pack. We have tried a few session packs and they have been a good seller as well! Everyone wants minutes around here!! We have not done the point’s thing here!!

We haven't tried points here either. We offer both sessions and minutes, with a fairly even split on customer preference.

MINUTES because it's a no-brainer. Total time purchased on a package minus minutes used. Simple to track available session time available for use. Points are a bit more complicated because assigning points to this machine vs that machine is somewhat arbitrary and how do you explain this to the client. MINUTES folks.

NOT !!! Minutes are not good for the owner. IMHO

never have done minutes & never will, another salon in town has them & I don't want them. Swithched to points about 2 years ago & never looked back. How do you explain points ?, it's like going the the carnaval & each ride takes a different amount of tickets . purchase points & the computor subtracts the appropriate amount of points for the unit used , points are good on any unit plus they never expire.

yes

We do sessions, monthly's and EFT's only. The customer pays the same no matter how many minutes they tan in a particular bed. Works for us.

I definately wouldn't do minutes. You have different level beds and the higher beds need less minutes. Even if you sold minutes for different levels it would be more confusing for your clients as well as your staff.
Points maybe because you can assign points for a session of a particular bed, but I use sessions. I and my clients understand it better.

We use points here, as well as single sessions, monthly unlimited, 3 month unlimited and 12 month unlimited. All set at different prices for the different beds except the points better beds = more points/minute used.

We use points and it is the only way to go. We are selling a tan, not minutes in a bed. Points do several things, 1. Points give the guest options and give us the opportunity to sell upgrades without having the guest go into their pocketbook. 2. Points (suns, credits, whatever you call them) are not not easily thought of as $$$$ by the guest.
3. Price increases are less formidable. You only raise "one point" instead of a dollar amount. The key to a effective point system is to keep it simple. Stay away from the "Club Med" style system (1,000 credits=$1.00). Confuse your guest and they will not buy.

I do know that points, sand dollars.,stars, sun, moons, what ever you want to call them work & they work good !!!! No one cares how many points they spend when they come in to tan...here is a short version of what I am doing ,

2- EFT programs, one at $49 ......tan in any unit
one at $30.......includes 15 & 20 min. units

so now for me I need something where the rest of my clients can tan in any unit & still accomidate my EFT clients.

Now there is the point system ( which was modeled after my friend that owns 5 Planet Tans here in the Bay Area )

Points NEVER expire (great selling tool)they are good on any unit in the salon. (so easy to upgrade them, to get them to spend more points per session...

Based on walk in prices (1 point is valued at $2)

Legs $8 or 4 pts

Stretch $10 or 5 pts

Ovation $12 or 6 pts

Big blue $16 or 8 pts

Hex/capsule $18 or 9 pts

Point Packages

26 pts $39
52 pts $74
78 pts $103
108 pts $139

So lets look at the 52 pt pkg.....they tan in legs for 4 pts, I just got ($74 divided by 52= $ 1.42) $1.42 x 4 = $5.69 for that sinlge session.

Blue (8 pts) $11.36........stretch (5 pts...20 min) $6.45 ...ovation (6 pts) $8.52....can you see how owesome this is ????????

so now I can sell all the EFT's I want & don't worry about the other clients !!!! The more points you purchase the better the value...this works for me because of the diversification I have in my equipment ( stand up, lay down , legs only & sessions ranging from 11 min to 20 min.) I am only 750 sqr ft & I will tell you that in 2004 I did over 100K !!!!!!! yaahoo

Now my highest pt pkg (not listed above)is based on... what is the lowest price I will take on any given unit.

I will say that it is a #### crunching game, but for me with 15 years in the financial industry it was easy !

This is for you Annie & the others that have pm'd me.

Thank You so much Linda.

We are converting to points next week and our members are excited about it but we have been telling them about it for months and the transition is going to be easy. Now everyone just asks us is it done yet we have 5 different systems so they like the fact they can just pick a bed and the minutes they want to do and they don't have to worry if its in there package or not no one feels like they aren't important, because they don't have the premier pkg every one has it now, its up to them on the way they use it. Yes its a number crunch and I that couldn't get through algebra figured it out my husband cal 4 plus and I had to explain it to him. go figure. I can hardly wait more money without the client noticing. Just remember to figure out the worst case senerio for a bundle of cost so it doesn't sink you, how long could some one really stretch out the points until repurchase. Also you have to sell your high end to make the high money for that is more points being pulled off at shorter session times.

Points are more flexible/ just make one point equal one minute and start from there.. Best of both worlds.

But if you do minutes, is it only on that particular level? example, 4 levels of beds do you have 4 different levels of min packages?

Could someone please pm me with some info on the pricing structure using the points? We have three levels of tanning and currently charge a co-pay for the upgrades. The points sound like they could be a better way for us to go, but I've never seen it done in our area so I'm a bit lost on how to set it up. I would greatly appreciate any info you are willing to share. Thanks, Annie.

Re: Minutes vs. Points

Okay, now I'm glad I looked at this thread because I am buying a salon and was confused as to why they used a point system. Understanding the price differences to us is great. I thank you veterans for helping us newbies out!
