Rep Power: 0 | Thank you all, again, for your feedback. I've been putting pen to paper (figuratively that is) to add up the different cost categories, first costs (build-out, equipment, etc), recurring costs (rent, utilities, insurance, advertising), labor costs, inventory & consumables, etc. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that I have a comprehensive list since I've just started. I am trying to do my homework here (as many of you wise people have suggested). I appreciate that in missy's situation - she's able to succeed with a smaller shop. Rent, labor and utilities are incredibily costly here. I think I need a minimum of 10 beds to be successful, or go with missy's formula but look for someone who has an extra 500 sq ft that they want to sublet. First though, I want to figure out if a 10 bed salon will be successful given the competition, racial diversity and income level. It seems like there are other areas that are more competitive than here (more salons in a small area) which essentially reduces the market share. I guess I'm going to have to do some more number crunching and hope that I can figure it out before somebody puts in a Planet Beach or equivalent in my spot (and if they do I guess I'll just have to look for another spot). |
