Rep Power: 0 | I have limited space in my salon and I need to know if there is an accessibility code for a salon bathroom. I am working from a shell and if I have to make a large bathroom, that throws my design and plumbing off a lot. |

Rep Power: 25 | Yes there is. Found this site that may be helpful -- http://www.bockstanz.com/Safety_Library/Restroom_ADA_Guide.htm In general, know you need a 36" wide door, a room large enough to turn a wheelchair around in, covered pipes below the sink, the toilet flush on the outside (toward the middle of the room) side of the toilet, a handle door opener (not knob), push button or handle faucets (not knobs) and a few other things regarding sink height, etc. Your local building department should have ALL this information for you, as well as any specific codes they impart. Some building codes require two restrooms - it depends on your s.f. and # of tanning beds I believe. Before you do anything, I'd make sure you have all this information - it's very expensive to re-do later! |

My husband was speaking to a friend at work that is working on his masters in this subject and said that if we post our bathroom as private or employee only, and not have a "Public" bathroom, we can get around it. Of course, we would let people use our bathroom. As a tanning facility, do we have to provide a public bathroom? |

Many businesses have been sued over this very topic and many of them are now no longer in business. Even if there are no local building codes where you are at you still must obey federal law. |

Yep! I know of a Restaurant chain that had constructed stores "prior" to this act. Along came Jhonny and his lawyers. Now they have had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make them comply with the "current" codes. |

The feds built it into labor law. 7' x 7' inside measurements are about the smallest you can get away with if designed properly. R |

You're really beginning to worry me now. Federal law trumps local code! BTW some people say we don't have to pay taxes either but we all know the consequenses of not paying. |
