Rep Power: 0 | Hello all. I just found your great website and I thought you people could help me. I want to start my own tanning salon in a town of 8000 by starting with 10 beds and having the people pay $15-$20/month for unlimited tanning. There are only 11 beds in the whole town. Not one of the businesses have an unlimited tanning per month. First, I was wondering if you think this type of business will make money? I live in Iowa and the weather is chilly half the year. Tanning is very popular, especially with high school girls. Also, I need help on HOW TO START UP A TANNING SALON?? Especially what kind of bed to use. What are the best beds to buy (lowest cost that last the longest)? How big of a building do you need (10 beds to begin with and eventually getting up to 20)? What size should the rooms be? What are ALL of the start-up costs? Once the business gets going, what are the day-to-day costs of running the business? What kinds of things does this include? I know there are a whole lot more things. Please feel free to give as much information as possible! Thanx All JayBird |

Rep Power: 117 | Sunsally has the best advice on this stuff. I just opened my first salon a few months ago. But just off the top from reading your post, if no one else in the area has a monthly unlimited, charging $15 to $20 is way to low. I run my unlimited at 39.00 and 34.00 for students. I am next to a High School and that is the majority of my business. Most tanning beds will fit into a 9 X 7 room and most tanning booths should not require more than 6 x 6. If your going to offer a 'mega' bed, you should plan for a 10 x 10 room. There's a long list of start up costs to consider. Construction, electrical upgrades (BIG MONEY), signage, computer, front desk, cash register, lobby furniture, decor, advertising, lotions, towels, bed cleaner, goggles, etc. and of course the beds. Your real money will come from selling lotions, teeth whitening, and other products. I would really consider finding a reputable dealer that can hook you up with quality, used beds. Theres lots of them out there. Put in new bulbs and the customers will never know. Buying brand new beds is like buying a new car and when you drive it off the lot it depreciates ridicuously. There are so many brands and styles of beds and stand up units that you will need to do lots of research on the net. Everyone has different opinions and to what beds are the best. I personally would not get more than one base bed. Serious tanners won't use them. No one likes mine and it has under 200 hours on it. I am new to the bus. and I am making money. I'm not getting rich either but I really like owning my own business and I've tanned my whole life so I figured why pay to tan somewhere when I could open my own salon. You will need to invest in a Business Plan when approaching the bank for financing. Just keep reading on this website and you will find tons of useful info. and when you get up and going everyone here can talk you through the good and bad days! GOOD LUCK! _________________ [ This Message was edited by: missyhot on 2005-09-29 16:39 ] |

Rep Power: 0 | Jaybird, I am about to open my salon and I have done a lot of research on beds etc...and you can get many questions answered by spending time on this website without even writing a thread. Once you have made a decision on a bed, some of the manufacturers will supply you with much of the start up information as a service to you for buying their equipment. I knew nothing to start and now I feel very educated about this industry. I went with Puretan for my beds. |

Rep Power: 117 | I personally use Australian Gold's Twilight and it works great. I used to use Crest White Strips but this works with the UVA light and gives a quicker result. I love it and my customers like it too! |
