Rep Power: 0 | This may be a really dumb question, but I really don't know the answer.. I'm new to tanning in general and my wife and I are wanting to open a salon soon, so I really do need to know what exactly is the difference in a base bed and an upgrade bed??? My wife only vaguely knows, but can't explain it to me |

Rep Power: 0 | Coconut, I realize I need to get educated on the subject. After finding Tantalk on the net, I figured it would be a VERY helpful place. Don't worry, I will be knowledgable on the subject before I actually open a salon. I never jump feet first, I like to know what I'm doing ahead of time. |

Rep Power: 68 | Base beds, in most markets (I think), generally have between 24 and 32 lamps total. And the majority of these beds run 100w, non-reflector lamps; the lowest output tanning lamps available. Up-grade beds from there have increasing numbers of higher output lamps (140w-200w reflector), and finally end up with an all high-pressure (commonly referred to as "HP") unit with most output possible in an approved tanning system. I hope these generalizations helped clear up some of the confusion; and like Coconut says, read up. There's a lot of BS (a lot of it mine, some of it not) on some of the threads, so don't hesitate to ask for clarifications and opinions. Opinion is my specialty. But I advize you to always get a second opinion just to make sure. Good luck. |

Rep Power: 117 | Just my opinion, but base beds are a waste of money. Skip them because no one wants to use them. Most tanners are experienced and want a deeper tan. A beginner tanner could just use an upgraded bed for less time and get the same result. No one likes my brand new base bed. |

Rep Power: 23 | level 1.........level 2.........32 or more 100 watt lamps with 3 facials. 20 minutes level 3.........40 plus 160-200 watt reflector lamps with 4 or more facials. 10-12 minutes and a comparable standup. level 4.........a true high pressure bed like the matrix. depending on your area will determine your bed mix. if you will have plenty of high school/college age customers you will need plenty of base beds. if your area is knowledgeable about tanning beds and will demand bigger beds than you need to find that out. visit other salons in your area for some idea. good luck greg |

Rep Power: 23 | west side i had considered the 15 min bed for a level 2 but didn't for the following reasons: i wouldn't have a distinct difference between level 2(15min) and level 3(12min). in order to encourage people to upgrade i needed a distint difference. 15 min beds would have plenty of output which would satisfy them. my level 2 bed is offered by minute and monthly packages. with the monthly you have customers that come in practically eveyday therefore i would be spending a great deal more for lamps because the 15 min beds i looked at had 100 watt cosmolux reflector lamps which are far more$ than say the beach suns that i presently use.and i have plenty of customers that enjoy going for 20 mins. of course the benefit of 15 min beds would be that other than better tanning would be shorter tan times which certainly help during the busy times. so as i stated before alot depends on your area and what your customers prefer. greg |

The big distinct difference would be the size and the wattage. People will see the size difference and know. How would you explain the difference between your level one and two though? |
