Hello everyone, I'm new here and new to the whole Tanning Salon scene. I just have a few questions for now, but as I read through the threads here I am sure I will come up with more.

First off, I am 18 years old, planning on starting an actual business (been messing with some e-commerce businesses here and there) between now and the time I am 21. My mother is going to go in the business with me, and what better than something we both do - tan. Enough chit-chat for now though, on to the questions.

First question that I was wondering is what a good dimension for your tanning rooms are? I don't think I would want them too small to have the customer feel like they're scrunched in a tiny room, but making it too big could waste building space - resulting in loss of money.

Second question is about how much am I looking to need to spend in equipment to start up? I know this is a broad question, but I am not looking to go 100% top-of-the-line for right now. I was just wondering if anyone could give me a rough guesstimate on total start-up cost (minus the building, of course).

Third question I had is pricing. Now, I know this has probably been discussed a thousand times on here so I was a little iffy to asking about it. But what is a good base price? I'm not sure if this will be a tough question to answer or not, as I have read about 12-minute, 15-minute, and 20-minute beds, Sunless Tanning Beds, etc. which could all have varying prices. So if this question doesn't really have a answer, that's fine.

Thanks!

I think it would be a good idea if you went and worked at a tanning salon. I would not work at one where you might open your new location. I think it is great that you and your mom are going into together with this venture...but the more you know and feel comfortable with your new business...go to Nashville this year...and just soak it all in and take your time.

A new salon will cost you between 120k-500k it just depends.

Alright I have another question, when your customers sign up do you have them sign any kind of legal papers (due to possible skin cancer, etc)?

That depends on the state you are in. Some states are heavily regulated, some aren't at all. Regardless, I would agree with D that you should work in a salon, go to Nashville this year http://www.theita.com/ Read all you can on this and other tanning info websites. Also, even if it isn't regulated in your state you should get certified right away...this may answer a lot of questions for you regarding skin cancer. http://www.tanningtraining.com/

Here are some other links that might be helpful to you.

As far as your room size, as you talk to bed manufacturers and distributers, they should be able to help you with that - it depends on the beds you plan to get... And as far as how much you spend on equipment, that all depends on the mix you plan to have. I only have 6 base beds, one upgrade bed (not an HP) and a stand up and to replace all of my beds I know would cost about $75,000 and that's on the low end....

Can a 6-bed salon be profitable? I live in a city where the 2000 Census population was 205,727, there are probably about 10-15 salons in the city, however a new area just got added on (a brand new mall, booming area full of wealthy people) and there isn't a salon over there yet. What is in Nashville?
