In an industry that is sensitive to seasons, it is important to open your new salon at the most effective time of year. If you start your new salon project now you have time to find the best location, negotiate your lease, write your business plan, build the salon, hire and train your staff and be open in November or December. This is the best time of year to open. The busiest time of the year is January through June. To open before the end of the year allows you to get the bugs out and expose your salon to all potential tanners before they start making commitments for the up-coming season. Don't wait to the last minute to get started.

In a perfect world. I wish it could work out this way all of the time. I have found the developers are always late! I know there are times when the location is so amazing and I just have to "get over" the timing...just have reserves if you have to open in an odd time...

Just my opinion but that would be cutting things kind of close. Things are going to come up, go wrong, buildout may be running late etc. I can't imagine just now starting a business plan and being able to present a good one. My sister and I have spent about a month working on ours and I think it is going to be very beneficial to walk in to a lender being able to present an amazing business plan. I wouldn't have to rush through the opening process and end up opening a salon that wasn't ready. I think the business plan should be at least started in the beginning of June and don't rush the process of trying to open, better to start extra early.

Always remember in the world of business things always take longer than one will predict. I would always allow for a little more time and $$$ than you originally thought. The rewards and personal satisfaction often outweigh the headaches and heartaches.

This is precisely it is a good idea to have a business consultant assisting you. Because opening successful salons is what we do. There is no time wasted trying to figure out what to do or how to do it. Where you may spend months creating a business plan. A consultant can create a much more effective one in days. We know what the lenders are looking for and how to develop it. Here are just some of the services that a qualified Consultant will provide. Business Plan Development Assistance
One of the most important elements of opening a business or requesting funding for a new business is a comprehensive business plan. In order to create a business plan you must have a complete understanding of the type of business you plan to open. A good business plan is more than development cost and spread sheets. You must have a clear understanding and strategic plan as to how a successful business will be operated. After 27 years in the tanning industry I have developed hundreds of business plans utilizing the proven techniques of the Tanning Today marketing program. Business plan development is one of the many services that are available to my clients at no cost.

Income Projections
It is important to have realistic income projections when evaluating locations and writing business plans. I have developed an accurate formula for creating income projections based on industry trends and statistics combined with the demographics and equipment mix of your salon.

Site Evaluations
The location of your business can be the difference between success and failure in the tanning industry. There are many things to look for when choosing a tanning salon location that you would not be aware of unless you have owned a successful salon before. It is my job to insure proper evaluation of a desired location.

Demographics & Demographic Evaluation
Many important decisions are made based on demographics. Your business plan, income projections and future growth are based on demographics. My custom designed tanning salon demographic reports are provided by Demographics Now, the most comprehensive demographic source in the US. My demographic evaluation is based on industry statistics, and is a valuable tool in the development of your new salon.

Floor Plan Design & Build-Out Specifications
In order to properly evaluate a potential location or to maximize the effectiveness of a selected location, you must have a floor plan. I will create a floor plan design and build-out specifications based on your particular needs. Having a floor plan in the early stages makes it easier to negotiate a lease and get accurate build-out bids.

Lease Negotiations
There is an art to negotiating a lease. I can save you thousands of dollars over the term of your lease and get you maximum build-out allowance. The money you save on your lease can be used in other areas of your business development.

Tanning Today Marketing Program
My marketing program is the most successful program in the tanning industry today. Salons using my proven methods of marketing are among the top 2% of income producing salons in the industry. Now you have the opportunity of being the most successful salon in your area.

great post Steve...I hope that any new person can control this or hire someone who can help...
I can tell the new salon owners....if you are opening in a new strip center... they will at least be 2-3 months behind their delievery date...and your buildout will be 2 weeks more at least....you can scream, freak, stalk them, cry, laugh, fight, and it will still be at least 2 weeks later ....and I am being kind...
