Rep Power: 0 | Kinda long .. bear with me.. any help is GREATLY appreciated? Well basically this is the "story" - I know work in a tanning salon. I am still in hi gh school but i am going to school for cosmetology at the same time. The thing is.. eventually.. (sooner then later) i would like to open my own tanning salon / spa. the thing is I have tried to talk to a couple people about where to start (ex; my salon owner , guidnece counselor in school) and they aren't helping me at all. The tanning salon i work at.. the owner SAYS she didnt go to college, & just to get smart tan certified and brushes off anything else when i ask ...and my guidnce counselor says to take BUISNESS CLASSES in college.. but WHAT kind of classes? Ive been reading through these forums.. and didnt really see anything most of yous seem like you know what your talking about .. and could probablly help me out. again .. thank you soo much for any help ya could give me. |

Rep Power: 0 | My opinion is that if you have an opportunity to go to college...do that. By no means is it a necessity, but the things you will learn while pursuing a general business degree will help you greatly in the business world. And ultimately that is what we are talking about… owning a business. There are distinct differences between running a salon and owning a business. Having exposure to marketing courses, accounting courses, supervisory courses, etc. can only help you when starting your business. Again, this is my opinion. I'm sure that a lot of salon owners do not have a business degree...and some are probably more successful than those who do. But, if you have the opportunity why not get the training that will help you to be the best business owner you can be. |

Rep Power: 23 | I have a degree in Marketing and also Business and yes they have helped me out in some instances but most of my learning came hands-on. I have learned more from others in the industry and also my successes and failures then I would in any book. Many people do not like to talk about college/schooling like your salon owner, maybe because she feels intimidated about it. Sometimes is falls into arrogance. Either way do what makes you happy and interests you. Good Luck! |

Rep Power: 20 | The other advantage to college is that it serves as a bridge from the teen years to the adult world. It's hard to explain if you haven't been there/done that, but these are transitional years, your consciousness and world view is constantly changing, and the educational process eases you in and gives you a head start. |
