I've worked in a tanning salon in Carrollton, GA through college and the experience taught me a lot. Now, I want to open my own salon in my hometown, but I have no idea how to get started. Can someone please help me? Let me know where to start first: get a bank loan and get retail space? Purchase beds and supplies? I know all of this is important, I just do not know where to begin.................

Why do you want to get into the indoor tanning busines? What is it about the tanning industry that attracts you? This is a seasonal business and saturated in some geographic areas. I am not familiar with Carolton, GA, but how do you now there are tanners there? How many? How many competitors? Personally, I would not get into this business, because it is already very crowded. It is just tough to make money in this business, so knowing the potential for your area is where you start first.

Being properly funded is the most important issue. If you have a great deal of cash and own your own home, getting financing should be easy. Without these elements, opening your own salon will be difficult.

I have to keep wondering why new salons keep opening up if no one is making any money. I must be missing something. Why do people spend 100's of thousands of dollars to make next to nothing.

I think it is important to get your training from a larger company...starting your own business is one of the hardest things to do...and if you are already there and you are 25 then god love you! I still think you should work somewhere that can give you experience and have you mature and get tons of business savy...I wanted to own my own business since I was 17...but I went and worked for large companies for 12 years....I think it is important to get training....and it is great on someone elses dime...so have goals and save and learn...and go out and learn from companies and know you are doing it to just open your own business....and then come out and kick....! If you have this figured out at such a young age you are so far ahead of 90% of us...so good luck and keep working and learning

I have to say dwight has a point. However.....I did this all very young. I worked for one of the largest franchises in the US, the owner was an absentee owner so I learned sooo much. I then opened my own business in the same industry that I had obtained so much knowledge from. Start up was not a huge investment such as a tanning salon so the ROI was very good. I did this when I was 22. A year later a salon had shut their doors and I decided to open a salon. I had tanned at many different places, but never worked in one. One of my employees in my other business worked in a salon for over 2 years so I hired her on as my manager. I did a lot of research on my area prior to opening my first business. I was fortunate to be able to attend the Vegas show before opening where we both learned sooo much. Yes we have made mistakes going through the process, we have figured out what works and what doesnt and even to this day continue to learn which is the only way you can move forward. We did fairly well our first year but do not get into this thinking that it is easy money. MOney comes in such a seasonal basis. BEfore you decide anything, I would visit as many salons as possible, seek detailed information about your city from a couple of different sources. Speak with an accountant because as everyone has already stated you will need some decent amount of cash flow and that is just the beginning of owning your own business. If you have the desire to do it you can but be educated and be smart. I am 25 and working on a third business outside from the tanning industry. Good Luck to you

River Brat....you are my hero....way to go...I wish I had the guts and knowledge at an early age....I think if you do it in your 20's ...you have to be sooooo smart and good with your money....I know I could not have done it..so my hats off to anyone that can do it in their 20's.....I know for me I had a lot of learning to do in my 20's...and everything I learned I used for my 30's....and it has been so amazing for me so far....if you are mature enough and can do it god love you! I wish I would have started in this business in my 20's...I don't think I would have been able to grow the company like I have in my 30's but ....I am sure people reading this and who are in their 40's or older want to smack all of us right now....

Salon Girl,

I don't want to discourage you, but you need to do your homework. Make sure you understand your local market and competitors. Don't rely solely on demographics. Know the potential of your market. The tanning salon industry is very crowded right now. Lots of salons. Tanning is also very seasonal, so don't rely solely on tanning. Position yourself for year-round revenue. Include massage, day spa, hair, nails, eyewear or apparel in your salon product/service mix. If you haven't done your homework stay out because the tanning industry shows no pity.
