I have been reading about selling minutes instead of sessions. How does this work? What is upgrading and how does that work?

DWhite6872 02-06-2005 07:23 PM

Well....sessions has been the way a lot of tanning salons have priced themselves...and then they would charge to upgrade from one package to another such as if you have 10 sessions in a regular bed and you would like to try a bed with facials you would charge the customer an additional $5.00 to tan in your bed with facials.

There are a lot of new salon owners who believe in minutes or dollar packages....with this method you would have a monthly membership fee and then you would have certain upgrade packages for sale. You can sell your upgrade packages in bulk and offer your membership clients special deals on upgrades if they are a member.

What kind of package prices do you have? I see other businesses with "unlimited tanning for 1 month...$30" This has to be for the base bed. What should the upgrade monthly packages be? How much should the minutes packages be for different kinds of beds?

Stop. Search and listen. I would like for you to read a bunch on here and other sites! I want to help but I would like to see you come up with a feel for your demographics, industry, and business plan! We can't just tell you what to do, there is more to it than that.

Huge discussion on packages in the Industry Proffesional forum. "Bottom line price for a Tan" Excellent discussion on how to price packages. Minute packages are a no no. Read to see why.

I like doing minutes it's easy to understand.

MJ 02-09-2005 12:08 AM

I never really understood it...how exactly is it done 'correctly' without teh client milking a pacakge for all it is worth. And ulimately not getting color becasue they do not increase thier session times to conserve minutes?
the reason why I ask this is...when I purchased my salon the VHR unit was the only bed I had that had both session and had minute package options. And it was a pain ( due to the problem above)
So I stopped doing minute packages altogether.
How do you keep that from happening?

with say 3 levels of tanning

What your going to do will also depend on what people are doing in your market. But if you do points or minutes it's going to deduct the same way. Unless you are running specials. If you have six different levels each one is worth a different value. I would only do points or minutes. If you purchase level one minutes and go into a level 4 it's going to use more minutes since it's a higher value. The concept on points is the samething. You buy 100 points base bed is 10 to use but your level 4 is 35 points to use etc...

I say forget the minutes, like MJ said.....Most Salon owners are moving away from that I know of only one salon in the entire San Francisco Bay area that does it & they are going to do away with it..

points, sessions & packages are a better bet I.MHO
