We are new salon owners but very experienced retail/computer people. The salon we bought already had the SunTouch software installed and I cannot imagine not having it (or at least something similar).

It not only tracks your client pkgs, including different pkgs, but has some really nice reporting tools to aid you in making critical business decisions.

It also has employee time clock, EFT options, cash register drawer controller, tracks register balance, etc. A really nice all in one pkg! Only other thing you will need is QuickBooks!

The first thing we always ask is "How do you backup a card system?" At least with software you can backup all of your data in just seconds. You can summarize just about everything that has taken place in your software by a multitude of reports available within your software package. You won't misfile cards. Its also much easier for an employee to just keep the cash on a sale, and drop in a card that you'll never notice. I'd definitely make the investment into some sort of software over a card system. Good Luck!

Computerize! Even with a small initial client list you'll be thanking yourself in the future. Leave the cards for Tarot readers.

I still use the card system, and I'm VERY happy with it...

What is this about "backing up" the card file? My card file has never "gone down"? You must be talking about cards printed by Microsoft!

And no, I don't live in the dark ages...We are highly technology oriented. POS system to track sales and check in/out customers, terminal to connect with our AS/400 for accounting and history lookup, PC for online ordering, etc...We've not opted for salon software because I can't find anything to run on an O/S other than Windoze...so, we're going to write our own. But, it's realy just going to be an interface to track appointments, we'll still run sales on the register...

Its not just about a computer going down. Card systems can be stolen, they can catch fire, or even hurricane damage. And yes, we've dealt with salons having all three issues with their computers too. Even one salon where the computer was the only thing stolen. Wonder if their competitor did that? Fortunately they all had backups of their data and were able to get up and running very quickly.

Regardless of what system you use, having the ability to backup your data is a must. Secondly having software will allow you to summarize all of your sales data, visits, run labels for mail marketing or even e-mail marketing.

Sure, you can go out and get another operating system to avoid using windows, and then buy or write five programs to run your salon but its much cheaper to buy a pre-packaged software solution that does most if not all of what you need. And to top it off, you don't have to hire or be a computer person to use it.
