Hi, I have been thinking of opening a a tanning salon in Massachusetts. I am not sure where to begin. What the first steps are? Any info you all can supply would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a salon in MASS. Here's some advice. If you have a lot of personal debt forgetit. I work 70+hours/week and is enough for ME to live. Where are you thinking of opening?

I am looking to take over an exisiting salon business is failing.I do think I can correct this problem. the owner wants to sell equiptment as follows 1 Sun Capsel 54 bulb 150w,2 Sun Dome 48 bulb 160w vhr,2 Sunne Bronze 732 3 32 bulb 3 pos. face tanner 100w uvb and 1 Sun Quest(old 1994) 7000 40 bulb 100w 7.5. Is there a blue book for used machines? If not how are the value of these machines deiermind ?

You are starting right by doing lots of research befor you jump in. It is a fun, creative business...but..it is also a lot of hard work, long hours and several very slow months each year. Check out the search feature on this site (and others, as there is valuable information on most of them) and review old posts. As far as the value of the beds you are considering, you need to know the cumulative hours on each bed (most have an internal counter) ans well as judging the physical condition. Know that these beds may get you through a season but you will probably want to replace them soon. Used beds depreciate quickly. Also, you need to see the books of the salon to see database size, active packages, pricing structure, etc. It is as big a job (if not bigger) to take over a failing salon and try to make it go. It is failing for a reason. Find out why.

Not trying to discourage you at all but go in with your eyes WIDE open!! I would have done things a lot differently if I had taken the time to research much more before I opened my salon. The thing that has saved me is all the wonderful people I have met online and at trade shows who have been willing to share their experiences with me.
