Does anyone own any salons at a beach and how well do they do in comparison to tanning salons inland?

EZ Tan, a 26-store operator from W. Palm Beach to Miami. I've got other examples if you like. Compared to salons inland, they do quite nicely, thank you very much - as we have seen the numbers for both inland and beach operators.

The beach isn't much competition for many reasons:

The beach:
1) uncontrollable amount of sun. You will almost always get sunburned or wind-burned.
2) Too much work to schlep all the junk there and back
3) sand gets everywhere
4) your appearance immediately turns to awful as the wind, sun, and surf destroy your hair and makeup.
5) sweat
6) little parking

Conversely, you can tan at an air-conditioned salon in comfort and meet your girlfriend for lunch and you still look nice and smell nice.

I think the question was....not compared to tanning ON a beach, but say someone owns a salon NEAR the beach, do they do well. I understand the points to be as if the tanner was ON the beach, not in a salon on the beach. Am I wrong? The first point (compared to salons inland) works...but...I dont understand your beach points. I've often wondered the same thing....if you live in the keys, and own a salon, are you successful?

Thanks Gary. You did answer some my question. I guess I was just basically wondering if salons located in such a seasonal area as a beach did as consistently well as inland stores. I know the tanning business is not a year around consistent business of course. If you live at the beach you gotta look like it right?

My first concern is the fact that salons depending on size will draw from a given radius. If you are on the beach you are giving up half of that radius draw.

jughead:

You said a mouthful: "if you live at the beach you gotta look like it".

Steve:

"If you are on the beach you are giving up half of that radius draw."
Please allow me to address your valid concern...

In most cities, the population radius around your salon is made up of mixed development: single-family dwellings (homes and condos), multi-family dwellings (condos and apartments), and commercial.

At most populated beaches, there are very, very few single-family units because real estate is too costly. Multi-family is the majority of current building. Therefore, the lack of 1/2 of the radius is made up for in the increase in population density.

In less populated beach areas, there are very few people anyway to base building a salon model upon and I agree with your concern.

Beaches, these days, are starting to look more like city centers with loads of mid-rise and high-rise buildings due to real estate values. These are the areas where the 1/2 radius that is lost is replaced by higher population density.
