Rep Power: 0 | Our family is considering opening a tanning salon in a new Kroger center currently under construction a couple of miles down the road. We have never done anything like this although we have opperated a family owned plumbing and heating business since 1971. We have already begun the process of looking at the cost of leasing space ($26.00 sqft) but we have no idea, yet, if that's a fair/average rate for retail space in this area. We know you can't help with that, we can find that out for ourselves, that was just an example of how new to this we are. What we need to know is... what do we need to know/learn about this business. What kinds of factors do we need to consider in order to decide if doing this would be feasable. What kinds of start up costs would be involved. What kinds of market research should we be doing and how do we go about getting that information. We have way to many questions right now, many of which I'm sure have been asked before, so we'll be reading through the posts here to find the answer to as many of them as we can think of and can find. Since we have no previous experience with this, I'm sure there are going to be considerations and questions that we simply wont think, or be aware, of. We would greatly appreciate it if those of you here willing to help would give us some idea of the things we should be looking into. We'll be happy to do the research ourselves but we need to know what we should be researching. Thanks for your help everyone, wish us luck! |

Rep Power: 23 | We recently opened a new store,Asking price was $8 sq ft in a new plaza. After many meetings we agreed to $14 a sq ft and they did the entire build out, rooms electric, and AC. with a 5 year lease. Flick |

Rep Power: 21 | The best place to go for help is the tanning bed companies. www.sundash.com has a wealth of information on opening a new salon. Or www.etstan.com The tan bed companies have the resources to help you with demographics, locations, costs... of course, they hope to win your business. That is their payoff. We opened our salon in January and have learned tons. We did not open in the best area, but we owned the building already, so we knew it would take some marketing efforts. We had a good spring and are breaking even during the summer. I am very much looking forward to next spring where we won't be so green! Good Luck! |

Rep Power: 0 | You'll never make any money at $26 per square foot!! The best research is to work at a local salon. Also, check out how busy they are during the months of July - November. If you're used to seeing a tanning salon being super busy during March and are thinking KA CHING, then you might be in a rude awakening when you find that they don't even tan enough customers during the slow season to break even. Most people who decide to open a tanning salon only have experience of what a salon does during the busy season. Little do they know that you have to set aside money to make it during the slow season. If you aren't good budgeting your money, you'll be down the tubes within the first year. I wouldn't even consider opening a tanning salon at this time. 10 years ago it was a no brainer. Now there are too many salons and too many large franchises to compete with. Prices are a lot lower and you have to work twice as hard to make the same amount of money. My salons are paid for. That is the only reason that I am still in business. |

Rep Power: 21 | Wow Chester how long have you been in business. I would love to have my salon paid for. I've got 3years to payoff my financing and I sure hope I make it. I'm at the end of my 1st year of being open. I totally agree about making sure one has enough cash to pull them through the slow period. I'm crossing my fingers! I am determined to hang in there and I'll do whatever it takes to run my salon even if I am working 24/7 literally Hope someday I will feel the "financial freedom" that self employment brings LOL..... |
