Rep Power: 0 | Flick, you never did answer the question of which car you would drive. One thing I have noticed since I joined Tan Talk last October is that you seem to have all of the answers all of the time on all of the topics. I don't deny that you probably know quite alot about a few subjects and very little about alot of others. I do respect that you are a heavy marketer. Just to let you know the Chicago market is alot more expensive to advertise in. I don't get my ROI in broadcast TV or radio, However I pound the Crap out of my database with direct mail,POP posters, referrals, and grassroots networking. So whenever you want to park your chevy and hop in my Mercedes, let me know. Also since you seem to know I'm not making what I should be,could you please tell me that figure I should make my first full year in business with 23 rooms. That way we can submit that to MSU.We could call it "THE FLICK BAROMETER", that way if you are a salon owner below that figure you can go home and tell your family you are a failure and if you are above it then "pack the bags kids" we are going to Disney World! Thanks I don't think I could have come this far without you. |

Rep Power: 23 | My daughter. I have a staff, and I normally leave by noon each day. I am just a little ways from SC. I was in higher management before I opened my salon. I ran 13 stores opened every one of them, each had 4 employees. Did it for 9 years, thats how I was able to open this salon with such ease. |

Rep Power: 23 | I am not going to make a brag fest out of this,I stand by what I said,450 thous is to much for a 23 unit salon. My opinion. What you drive is your own concern. I'm sure there are others who would prefer a Harly. Flick |

Rep Power: 0 | Flick, I would just like to let you know I do not drive a Benz. My reference was just to make a point. I chose to equip and decorate my salon a certain way that I WANTED it. The franchise I chose let me. Whether or not my equipment and salon is overpriced and not as practical is up to ME. My salon is a reflection of myself. I spend as much time there as I do at home,so I have to like it and everything it represents, the same way I do with my home. Flick, I just want to say I respect your time in the business. I also appreciate your opinion and respect that you have one. Sincerely. |

Rep Power: 0 | I never have understood a franchise. It's not like it takes rocket science to throw a tanning bed in a closet and call yourself a business owner. The real money is caring for your customers. plus it's not like KFC where you at least get a secret recipe right?? I mean really what do they do after the salon is set up? other than take money from your register. It's like having two Uncle Sam's! Now what I think would work if I were to endorse a tanning salon is a true product that no one else can get. Like a super bronzer or an exclusive on something. Granted There will always be a burger King across from MacDonald's but at least the owners know that there food is not the same.... AND BEFORE YOU GO SCREAMING ABOUT HOW DIFFERENT ONE FRANCHISE IS FROM THE OTHER YOU MIGHT WANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE AVERAGE CUSTOMER CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE. Not because it is too complicated but because like they said earlier in this thread " the technology has not really came that far." |

Rep Power: 29 | Why would you want to be able to tan people from the franchises "sister stores" at yours for free? If I had a PBT membership in one neighborhood and I work in another and tan there (instead of the one that I signed up for) the $$$ to my understanding still goes to the first one. WTF! Open and run your OWN business as IF it were a franchise. Create the look, feel, ambiance of a larger company without losing the charm, wisdom of a indy operated business. It has been a success for me thus far. |

Rep Power: 20 | Franchises are any business. There are good ones, there are bad ones. To get the lowdow spoeak with as many franchisees as possible. Find out how the franchisor supports their franchises (training, support, sales, marketing, operations, regulatory, etc.). Meet the owners and key officers and support staff. Are these the kid of people you think you can work with? Try to obtain a copy of their franchise offerig circular. Nothing wrong with askig. This will tell you just about everything you need to know about the franchise chain. How many locations they have, co-owned vs franchised, failures in last year, total revenues, average franchise revenues, royalties, frachise fees, owners of franchise, compensations, operations overview, etc. There is something to be said about tanning salon franchises and as many of you know, I have supported most of the major ones like Planet Beach and Hollywood Tans. When I hear that franchises are bad for the industry this upsets me because you do not present any facts. I keep hearing about franchises that are not doing well. How do you kow. Do you have access to their financials. There are a lot of you here who speak from the side of your mouth. Don't have any facts to present, no evidence, yet the franchises you talk about are growing like crazy. Perhaps you are a little peeed they are doing so well, and you aren't doing so well. Is that it? Newbies entering the tanning salon business need as much help as they can get. Tanning salon franchises, especially the good ones that have been aroud, that have a successful business model, have the whole operations, marketing, sales & promotions and operations down. They know what works and what doesn't. They know more about their competitors, the tanner demographics, lifestyles and how to target them. Personally, I believe that as a group a tanning saon franchise is a formidable force to be dealt with. They have research and marketing divisions understand the dynamics of each market pretty well and as they get larger that information becomes even more important, so watch your back. The tanning salon franchises are here to stay and they are growing and you independents who think you kow it all. Look behind you. They are coming. Just through that in there for effect. Leo |

Rep Power: 26 | I think you should buy three of each franchises! Dumb franchisees deserve to lose all their money, their home, and impoverish their childen. Any questions? Just ask your franchisor. They have all the answers. |
