Are flyers an effective method of increasing sales?

I'm planning to hand-out thousands of flyers when I take over an existing 5 unit tanning salon in June. The salon is located in a busy town centre just of a heavy footfall road.

At this point of the seasonal peaks is it still worth advertising the business via newspaper, flyers, etc. Or, should I hold tight and leave any promoting until next season?

I think flyers are a great idea, and probley going to be the least expensive way to get your name out! I have always done flyers and even during the slow times it seems to get people into your salon!

Don't just throw something at the wall and see if it sticks. If you just purchased a salon, what is the most valuable part of that purchase?

THE CLIENT LIST. You know they are all tanners. Do a direct mail piece to all existing clients with some very special offers and coupons. Let the old customers see the new store. I hope you are making all of the appropriate changes to the store right away.

Steve is right. The CLIENT LIST you are buying is your GOLD MINE. Get them back in the door with a mailer. It's too late in the year to go prospecting now, but never too late to get old customers back in the door.

You can get success every month of the year reactivating your inactives and cross-selling and selling more to your actives.

The definition of your primary goal:

A tanning salon's primary goal is the collection of a database of happy, satisfied, and loyal customers, paid for by sales, to whom you can cross-sell, upsell, and sell more to.

Collection of the database
This is why you must have database software. You must quickly find out WHO the tanners are and then market over and over again to them.

Happy, satisfied, and loyal customers
It goes without saying that you have to keep customers happy and satisfied. This means being friendly, clean, and building a gorgeous place they'll want to visit. To keep customers loyal, you have to reward them early and often.

Paid for by sales
In some industries marketers will break even or even lose money on the collection of the database so they can then cross-sell, upsell, and sell more to the base. If you don't pay for the collection of the database eventually by sales, you're out of business.

Cross-sell, upsell, and sell more
Your goal includes reselling the people who you now know are tanners. Remind them. Give them irresistible reasons to return and make another purchase.

If you don't mail your database to bring tanners back in for cross-selling, upselling, and selling more to them, then what's the purpose in collecting it?

Keep in mind, too that your database is growing a little stale everyday that goes by.
