Yeah everyone. Keep giving freebees cause that's what pays the bills! Come on. I just threw out so many client cards that were one free visit and that's it. Some people pay HUGE money to advertise a free deal. Don't see where you can make it up if it's all free. As far as free visit as being standard, I disagree. Free visits are only for the select few and IT DEVALUES YOUR SERVICE. If they aren't willing to pay half, you don't want them.

I tried tan free the first time and i wouldn't recommend it. But i did like "bring in a friend who buys a package and you get a free time" deal. You wouldn't believe how many they tried to get to buy a package from me for 1 free time each. Also i am a "Coal Miners Daughter".

It does matter to the owners, because if you are on vacation there again then you will probably go back there and have to pay the next time. A normal tanning session doesn't cost but about 64 cents and if you like the lotion you will probably buy a bottle.

A lot depends on where you located at. I live in a village with less than 1000 people. We (my husband and I) just opened up a salon last month. There is 2 other tanners (beds) in beauty salons where ours is only for tanning. I did have a little advantage before hand as I also manage the Curves in town. What I did before we opened was go though the active members list and made a list of those who I thought might be interested in tanning. I when to vistaprint.com and had postcards made announcing our grand opening. The postcard entitled them to a free visit upon them presenting the card. This worked out fantastic as most of my clients go work out at Curves and then which is even better walk across the street to tan. I also give a first tan free as a way of building up clients. We already have built up a strong client list from being more of a customer service type business. The other places in town, I done think have even changed bulbs and make the clients clean the bed after there done. I can't believe how many people have said how ours is a much cleaner, friendlier, definitely better beds, and all around nice facility. IMO if giving a free visit away gets them in the door so be it. Once they are in and see the place also on what we have to offer most sign up. Again a lot depends on your location, if I was in a bigger city there would be no way that I would offer it.

We give every new customer a free "New Tanner" Pkg.
It's an incentive to get'em through the door!
In that Pkg they receive:
*Lotion sample-we explain why using lotion is important
*After Tan moisturizer sample-explain why using after tan lotion is important
*Free Eyewear (if they are local) (wink-ease) if from out of town (we think for our local tanners eyewear is a tangible commitment for them to come back)
*Tanning Brochure-the tanning brochure contains a free tan coupon when they purchase their 1st tanning package as well as lots of tanning information. This has been very successful marketing tool for us.

I feel that FIRST TAN FREE is also a bad idea, but for different reasons. Studies show that if you give out a free pass and you give out the same number of passes with some sort of cost associated with them 75% more of the passes with a cost associated with them will be redeemed. Keep in mind that you cannot sell anyone on all of the merits of tanning at your salon until they have visited it. Therefore it is important to have draws or lost leaders that will insure that all tanners in your area will visit you. Yes you will draw a lot of people that will not become a tanner at your salon because they are looking for something for nothing. You can not design your specials or leaders around eliminating that element. Try 3 Tans $3 new tanners only, or One week unlimited VIP tanning $10. There is one exception to the Free rule. The Free Tan weekend that should give you a quick start if you are a new salon or if you do it once every year to kick off your season. I have seen free tan weekends generate $10,000 to $30,000 in three days as well as drawing hundreds of new clients.

I am giving the first tan free now an I am about to stop. After reading this post I went back and had a hard look at some reports found that about 50 to 60 percent of the people that got free tans were coming back and putting there money on the table for package visits. I figure in the jan thru march I left about 1500 to 2000 dollars on the table. I like the ideal of the 3 visit packages for first time visiters if they are real customers they get the free one in the package, it gets them in a package and if all they are after is a free tan well they can pay there $5.00 and not come back they werent coming back anyway.

If you sell quality, people will pay for it! You don't need to give it away! There are 2 types of people who use the "Free Tan Visit" Those who just want the free visit and do not plan on coming back. And those who want the free visit but feel guilty so they buy a package that same day. Point made!

MJ, you mention start your prices out high because you can always lower them. How does a new business start out high and still compete with the competions already lowest prices in the area? They have already inched their way down to the best price to keep their heads above water. So what can the new business offer so much greater than the old ones other than new equipment...satisfied customers need a reason to go elsewhere like the new salon.

Just wantin' dibs on the best way to entice the regulars who are already regulars somewhere else. Free tans are great but isn't there some new tactics out there also that tanners might say, "Wow, I've never seen that one before, sounds like a great deal."
