I am looking to get into the tanning business by opening my own salon. I am located in upstate NY - I realize that business varies from state to state. I am just looking to see though if anyone can give me some kind of idea what it will cost me to open with 5-8 beds new or used. I have a place to rent so I have that figured out; I just need some kind of an idea of what beds, computer system, timers, etc. would run me.
Any Help you could give me truly would be appreciated

I my opinion Sun-Dash and Ergoline is by far the best equipment out there. Not only did the distributer help me with the beds but they continue to help me by teaching me newances of the bizz. I used Atlantic Tanning Distributers in ridgefeild nj. They were great. Helped me evry step of the way. good luck

It can vary depending on what beds/stand-up you purchase and how many. For starters, beds range from around $4,200.00 for a 30 lamp 20 minute bed to upwards of $7,000.00. I would go no smaller than a 30 lamp. 32 is even better if you can afford it. You should have a decent stand-up as well. They run $6,000.00 to over $10,000.00

You can start a 5 bed salon for around $33,000.00 to $40,000.00 depending on the rent and up-fit cost. If you buy used equipment, you could do it for less. It could even run more if you rent a shell and have to do all the construction yourself. The up-fit for a 1500 Sq. Ft. space can run $20,000.00 or more. You will also need to make sure you have adequate A/C too. 1 ton per bed. A/C runs about $1,200.00 per ton. 5 beds = 5 tons of A/C. Or about $6,000.00. The electrical can run around $2500.00 to $3500.00. Plumbing is about $800.00 per fixture. 1 Sink, 1 toilet, washer dryer hook-up and so on.

The average rent is $12.00 – $22.00 dollars per sq. ft. per year.

EXAMPLE: 1500 Sq. Ft. building would be $1500.00 per month.

Be real careful with your location. Don’t get in over your head. Have room to expand later. Good neighbors and landlord.

All of these figures are based on my area. Calling in favors from friends and doing a lot of the work yourself will save you huge money. You may be limited on how much you can do if you have to “Permit” the job. In most cases you will have to get a permit and have the building inspected. All of that cost a few bucks too.

I’m sure that the price of starting a salon can vary greatly depending on where you are in the country and what type of beds you purchase.

Most of all……HAVE A RESERVE OF FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST YEAR!!!!!!!! You’ll need it! Don’t break the bank and open broke! That’s the worst thing you could do!

Good Luck

In 1920, a German Physicist, by the name of Dr Mueller, invented the first UV facial lamp to treat patients with skin disorders..his work expanded and prospered over the years. In the early 70's, he introduced the first full body unit, which was to become known as Dr Mueller. We all know them as the Omega/Orbit. Dr Mueller, when he died in the 80's was obtained by the German research company, AUVL. Today, that tradition of the best tanning equipment, under AUVL guidance is still the Orbit/Giant-Sun/SunGate/Elixir..the BEST!!
