How important is the amount of lighting in the tanning rooms? Should the light be good, very good or dim?? Does it really matter?

We turned the overheads off when we took over each of our salons. Customers like it, much more relaxing.

The few not-quite-complaints we received were met with "Well don't you know where all of your body parts are by now?", lol. Overall, positive feedback. Reduces light bill too.

I like the idea of a dimmer salon. Right now we have overhead florescent light. I hate them. Our plan is to go with wall sconces in the rooms and maybe some lighted ceiling fans in our next salon.

I think the softer the lighting and paint the more class the salon has in the appearence.

What do you use Tamar? I may do something in the present salon this year. But with the way my plugins are postiioned it could look tacky if I am not careful.

We have overhead ceiling light kits in each room. It does not make the room bright, but everything in the room can be located and you can tell the room clean. It is more like soft lighting.

We have ceiling fans through the hallway, with light kits. Our walls are about a foot from the ceiling. As the day goes on, neon lights that run down the hall are set on a timer to come on at 4pm. This allows ample lighting through the day and as it grows darker. If it is an overcast day, I will manually turn on neons. These shut off at 6am, and looks pretty cool from the street when people are on their way to work.

Thank you all!

I was thinking that GOOD lighting would be better so the customers could see the tone of their skin before they get into the bed. I'm glad that I held off on mounting a florescent light over the bed until I got your thoughts. It's great having a place like this when your new!!

P.S. - I do require closing staff to turn on overheads when cleaning up at night before leaving. Although I have a keen eye for lotion splatters, they, unfortunately, do not. I think it is a selective vision thing, but we can get into this more in the Management Forum or Salon Owners Forum.

Be sure that whatever you decide that you check with your local building department...they may have requirements on the amount of lighting and the lighting that is allowed...we went through this in our area and ended up having to change a few things to meet the requirements...

My wife and I just bought a tanning salon and even though we are newbies we dimmed our rooms and most of the customers found it more relaxing.
