I am in the process of starting a new tanning salon. The salon will eventually have about 15 beds.

The current location has 200 Amps for electricity. I am starting the salon out with 7 beds. My electrican recommends to only wire the first 7 beds. This way I don't have to immediately upgrade the electrical box to 400 Amps. He said the upgrade to 400 Amps can be done later when I expand. His logic is I can save money upfront for now for not having to upgrade the electrical box.

My question is "is it a good idea to do it this way?"

Has anyone done it this way? My concern is what interuption will it be when he does the second phase to upgrade the box to 400 Amps? According to him, he said that can be done at night, therefore there won't be any interuption.

Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'd go for it now if you are able to. I'd also go with 600 amps I have 400 amps with 15 beds and am maxed out. I do have a lot of upgrades including the MATRIX though. It's beeter to have to much and not need it then not enough when you do.

Most of the time I help customer's build out a salon, we add the upgraded electrical needs as bait to sign the lease along with build out allowances, etc. That's not to say that all landlords will assist particularly if your in a hot area where people are in line to rent the space. I have had electricians work after close to add additional service and things went smoothly. I've also seen in the 17 years I've been in the industry a salon owner have no power the next day with 30 people staring at them waiting in the dark. Just make sure your guy didn't get his license out of a Cracker Jack's box like some we probably all know.
