Rep Power: 0 | I'm debating between going with a franchise and opening a salon on my own. I know a franchise is great in some situations, like a subway franchise. But I really can't see a clear advantage for a tanning salon. We don't have a major chain of salons where I'm from, so I'm interested in any feedback as to your thoughts. Are most owners here independent? |

Rep Power: 23 | Yes, most of us are independent. Many of us have already been just a number at a corporate office, so an in depth answer is not necessary. That's why I'M here. Why invest a large amount of money so someone else can tell you what to do? From a consumer's standpoint, I would choose an independent salon over a chain any day. Franchises (any industry) seem to never have that personal touch that I think is important. Management become robots striving to keep magic numbers, labor cost down, compromise here, shortcut there... |

Rep Power: 24 | they can not provide you with any big benifits and they will bleed you of profits, you will have no say, even if you can buy cheaper supplies and products you will not be allowed. Remember the franschise is in the selling a franchise business, not tanning sessions you are in the business of selling sessions. They dont care if you go under trying to pay them what you own them,, they got the biggest amount of money up front from you. |

Rep Power: 23 | yes true they dont like to see any of their restaurants fail but what about, kenny rodgers, miami subs? they went out .. The tanning industry is different , you need to have that personal touch. And franchises dont offer that. Trust me I owned a franchise restaurant, you are better off doing it yourself. |

Rep Power: 23 | Mitanner, I hope you do all the research necessary for starting any business. I have my opinion of Franchises and as you may have figured out that most of us are Independent operators. I have in my business experience..there have been just as many independent fail as I have seen franchises change hands. So I can tell you this. Tanning is not a quick buck industry that it may appear to be on the outside looking in. As many franchiser treat it as. If you care about your future and actually want to be your own boss... why would you subject yourself to being told what to do???(what beds to buy, what lotions to carry, and so on.) I feel that you can gain anything you need from this site and more then you could from some FRANCHISERS HEAD QUARTERS office. Leasing vrs purchasing, dealing with LANDLORDS AND LEASE NEGIOTIATIONS, UPGRADE BEDS, EMPLOYEES, SPECIAL PROMOTIONS. lOOK UP THE THREADS AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN FIND. And guess what??? You don;t have to pay us a dime of your profits.. If you want to I will give you my address though. JUST THINK OF THE FREEDOM THAT YOU ARE WOULD BE LOSING BY DOING THE "FRANCHISE THING." AND REMEMBER THAT EVEN IF YOU FAIL ..THEY STILL WIN. NOW.... IF YOU WANT TO START YOUR OWN FRANCHISE MORE POWER TO YOU! MJ _________________ TanTalk Moderator TanTalk Rocks!!!
