I'm wondering if any of you have an opionion on retail sales in a tan salon. I have been considering leasing nail stations or possibly selling yogurt/smoothies/coffee. Any comments or suggestions??

I thought about having a nail tech in my salon, but (1) they are hard to find (around here anyway) & (2) a nail tech told me that she worked in a tanning salon & clients complained about the smell so she had to leave. I don't have any info on the beverages. I did sell silver jewelry. Toe rings & anklets are big sellers. I also sell Venus Swimwear.

Be careful with getting a nail tech. Some states have regulations against this. Also, if you decide to go that route make sure you come up with an agreement that is workable for both parties. Buntanner recently brought in a nail tech. You might want to ask her how this is going.Jewelry does well for me. I recently added body lotion and shower gel. We started advertising gift sets for the holidays and gift certificates.Swimwear does well for some. Not for me.You might want to check the archives in the sidelines forum. There is a ton of info there.

A tanning salon should, I think from my experience gross from $140 to $160 per square foot per year. Those numbers are conservative and include the lobby, hallways, restrooms and laundry all of which you need. But if you subtract the nonrevenue square feet, the gross per square foot or tanning rooms goes from $300 to $500. So, if you rented a 7 by 10 foot room to a nail tech you would have to charge around $1750 to $2900 per month, to makeup for the revenue you would lose by not putting in one more bed.Steve Miller
