Is anyone going to be open on Black Friday? If so, what specials are you going to be having? Some ideas would be great!

We are having a free tan event on Friday and Saturday with 40% off lotions and sales on tanning packages. This is my first year in business, so I hope to get some of the shoppers that are out in here. This has sure been a dead month for us so far....

We open at 11am instead of 9am. We're offering specials on packages and lotions that day ONLY. We usually do well. We offer a one YEAR unlimited, Tan 'Till 2012, BOGO 1/2 on lotions, etc.

Can you afford 40% off your gross margin?

IE: If you average $5/tan (with your package prices) and you have direct costs of say $2/ tan; then you sell the tan for $3; will $1 in profit per tan pay your overhead?

FYI: I am not saying to not have sale, but make sure you do not shot yourself in the foot.

Always preferable to add value rather than lower prices.

For example - instead of 40% off, do Buy 1, get 1 50% off.

This SOUNDS like a better deal - but in fact, it is just a 25% discount. And you sell twice as much.

Can also up your sessions - for example - buy 10 visits, get 2 free, buy 20 get 5 free.

Can offer EFT at regular price - but give them back the cost of the enrollment fee in credits - or double or triple this as a real 'special'!


If you have already put out an offer of 40% off - REALLY work to make this in your favor. For example - rather than them buying ONE month at 40% off - have them buy a month AND a lotion. And DEFINITELY start at your MOST EXPENSIVE lotions. 40% off a $20 lotion is just an $8 savings - 40% off a $80 lotion is a $32 savings. Sell them on the SAVINGS and how it is the PERFECT time to really treat themselves to HIGH QUALITY products -- rather than just getting something cheap for a few bucks less.

Or instead of ONE lotion - sell them on also adding a facial tanner or after-tan extender/moisturizer.

Or instead of 40% off a month - sell them on your EFT (which is usually 50% off in "everyday pricing" anyway) and throw in the upgrade credits.

Even if 40% off was what you advertised -- really think about what you want to SELL - and push them toward THOSE items!

Thanks for the ideas. I bought some close out "end of the year" lotions to sell, so 40% off will still be good. I was just hoping with the free tan event, some people that tan somewhere else will at least come in and try us. We have new lamps, so they will get a great tan and maybe will switch to us. Even if it is just a few new customers, it will be worth it if they get great service, I hope..

Have a very specific plan.

Know exactly what bed you want them to tan on, what lotions you will suggest to them, what packages or memberships you will recommend.

Be assertive not passive.

Don't leave it to chance. Once you get them to walk through your door, sell them and keep them.

For our Black Friday we do 50% off all packages for 4 hours only. Made $1800 in those 4 hours. It works well for us I think!
