$1 Sundays

We just had our first $1 Sunday promotion this past week and had some pretty good success. By success I mean that ALL of our current members on EFT who normally come in on Sunday and just tan, yielding us nothing, upgraded to a higher bed. Point is we made money off of customers who would normally have not paid anything that day. Does anyone this kind of thing on a regular basis and what are your results if you don't mind telling?

Sure, we offered a "Tan for $1 per level" special and promoted it with a whole bunch of in house screen printed signs (all the stuff I bought at the dollar store for about 20 bucks). We would let new customers tan in any level for $1 in each level (we have 4 levels). Also any EFT member could upgrade for that same price. So if a new customer came in and wanted to tan for $1 in the base level beds then we had the chance to sell them a membership, a level 4 for $4, lotion, eye-wear etc. There were a few stragglers wanting just the base bed that came in, seeing as it was the first Sunday we ran the promo and Sunday is by far our slowest day but interestingly enough ALL of our EFT customers who didn't have an unlimited package upgraded. Also most of the members came in because they saw the signs and had been thinking about trying a higher level bed, this was just the promo they needed to pull the trigger that week and we even had a few who liked the higher level beds and upgraded their membership levels.

The promo was:
Dollar Sundays
$1 for level1
$2 for level 2
$3 for level 3
$4 for level 4
and Join for free with the purchase of a bottle of lotion

I do $5 dollar Fridays in the summer. M-Th dead, maybe 15-20 each day. Fridays 75 plus. Forces ppl to keep coming in, using up their lotion and any other time they have left. We have fun doing it, and it keeps our doors spinning.

We do "Super Single Saturdays & Sundays" - 50% off the walk-in price for a single tan. So tans range from $3.50 - $17.50.

We've been doing this for two years and it has been very effective for us. Weekends are now both good traffic and good $$ days. Very few use the Level 1 beds - most use the highest levels because it is "so cheap".

$1 - to me - seems too cheap (I don't know your levels & pricing though).


We also do 50% off Upgrades every Wednesday. Again - our customers really like this and make a point to get in that day to upgrade to our best beds.

Noted, price is definitely cheap. We talked about doing something similar to your Wednesday special as well but we felt like it may be too much. Is that is one of your busier days now because of that (sunsally)? Because I'm thinkin we may follow your lead.

The 50% off upgrades special on Wednesday is VERY popular!

From the time we first meet new customers, we talk to them about the ability to upgrade from ANY of our packages/memberships, and we mention that Wednesdays are half off upgrades.

When we sign up EFT customers, they pay a $27 enrollment fee and get $27 back in upgrade credits -- and we mention that Wednesdays are half off upgrades.

When we sell a "Tan till the end of the year" or "Summer Unlimited" package on our Level 1 beds -- we mention that we can upgrade and Wednesday are half off.

Ditto with any of our other packages - they can ALWAYS upgrade - and Wednesdays are always half off. We consistently reinforce this message.

When Wednesdays roll around, some of the customers are almost giddy....'cause it's half off upgrades day! We remind every customer -- "Did you want to upgrade today....it's half off upgrades day.....". Even customers that normally don't - will try it. And once they try it, it often becomes a "regular" thing...... Including on days BESIDES half-off Wednesdays.


In our salon, 80% of the tans are on upgrade equipment, only 20% on Level 1 beds. This isn't an accident - it is because of the pricing, promotions, and selling strategies we use.

Your pricing and promotions should be very "intentional" - always think about what you want to get from them.


For our Super Single Saturdays & Sundays it was designed to:

a. Build traffic and revenue on weekends which had been slow. Keep things motivating and in a "selling" environment for staff.

b. Build clientele with those around town who like to consider themselves "occasional" tanners, who won't commit to buying a package. But who DO tan - sometimes even more than they might 'admit'!

c. Continue to reinforce use of our best equipment. At 50% off -- you only save $3.50 to use our most basic bed. But you SAVE $17.50 to use our high pressure. Sure - it also COSTS $17.50 vs. $3.50. But customers like the idea of saving a lot to use the best - and then not coming back until next weekend and doing the same thing again!


And so on.


Same thing with 50% off upgrades -- that day the staff is especially in tune to "selling" - and more likely to also make lotion and other sales (since they have their wallets out anyway....). It takes on the feel of a "customer appreciation" day - customers really look forward to it and some almost get an adreneline rush. But at the same time -- we are making more revenue, more profit, and producing better results and happier customers --- which results in more referrals for new customers in the future!
