Website advice...

Hi All,

Have recently setup a tanning salon and am thinking about setting up a website.

A bit of research has revealed there are a number of companies offering websites/website design services so I'm a bit confused!

What sort of price should I be paying for a website? Should I pay a one off fee or a monthly fee?

I want something professional, any help/advice would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks,
Susie

Do you know what your hosting site offers? Some do it yourself is actually pretty good despite what some people may tell you here.

I know Dean on here is always a good choice though!

Re: Website advice...

Thanks for the reply eileen, I've played around with a few DIY options but they always end up looking unprofessional. Decided it is worth paying a bit more for something quality, possibly thinking about investing in SEO as well, just not sure on what I should be paying!

Re: Website advice...

I used the wix design, and did it myself for free. I just had to pay for the web address. It took me awhile, but with practice it turned out pretty good. I've seen alot worse that people are paying way to much for. www.oasistan.net

Thanks for the complement. I'm going to look it over to see where I could put salon pics in. I just need to take better pictures than what I have on my phone.

I put some pictures up and actually saw where I had forgotten to add my hours of operation. Glad I looked it over, but Wix is really easy and actually fun to use, once you get familiar with it.

Re: Website advice...

If you are in a competitive demographic a wix or other instant on website has zero shot at ranking anyplace.

Plus wix costs 150/ year. If you look at the code every wix site is an advertising platform for wix. Same true of all those sites they build in all kins of stuff that helps them.

A custom site may cost a few hundred dollars and probably less annually than wix et al.

One thing i advise everyone is buy or transfer your domain to godaddy and any legit designer will tell u how to point the dns. I have had to negotiate domain ownership and its not fun nor cheap for salon owners that got scammed

Doinv it yourself is crazy as all servers get hacked as any site can be hacked by a determined individual. You see in this thread the security issues.

Re: Website advice...

My cousin does internet marketing on the side and he is helping me with a site so I trust him. He said some of the do-it-yourself sites are getting better and better looking. You need to make sure you can control the title tag for every page so Google gets your keywords. You should be able to pay someone about $400 - $600 for a three to four page template site with a few pictures of your salon and contact information. After that, hosting costs next to nothing ($10 a month for unlimited # of site) so don't spend good money for that from your developer unless you are of the understanding you can call them for updates and any troubles. This is a good post with basic tips for tanning salons on internet marketing if you don't have a ton of money to spend.

Re: Website advice...

I have a Certificate in Graphic Design and when it came time to do my own site I knew I wanted to use a template. Easy, fast, simple.

I ended up using Vistaprint and the hosting/domain/email are around $10 a month with lots of options. I bought domains through GODADDY as they always have deals just google domain name deals and you can get a new one for $1for a whole year. I used GODADDY for the website for a contest and although they have some great designs I had so many problems dealing with them and everything is "extra" so I only use them for domain names.

ABSOLUTELY BUY YOUR DOMAIN name and get a few different similar options and direct them to your site (it's easy). You want to control your domain. Which will allow you to change host providers if you want at some point without losing your name. You save money and keep control. WIN-WIN!

I also HIGHLY recommend setting up your own site for a couple reasons. There are so many great user friendly website providers with professional designs and at the end of the day that $500 can go toward hosting your site for 3-4 years or other stuff.

Plus by doing your own site you can literally have it up in an afternoon and YOU will know how to update it etc. you don't have to depend on someone else that you have to pay to do it.

Clearly if I was selling my services as a Graphic Designer I would do something "special" but for tanning I just wanted something that was simple and got me up and running fast.
