Rep Power: 20 | Marketing your business Okay, so how much advertising/marketing is enough? Well, there can never be enough. But rule of thumb to have a successfully marketed business is a minimum of 10% of your GROSS Annual income should be spent on advertising. If your salon is generating $175,000 a year then you should be spending at LEAST $17,500 on advertising for your salon a year. Some ideas are: #1 Business Cards...obviously #2 Website...nowadays, if you don't have a professional looking website for your business, you stand a chance of losing growth potential and awareness. Nobody opens a phone book anymore, GOOGLE is everyones search tool now. If you aren't listed, you'll get passed over for another salon in your area that has the nice looking website and information available to them. #3 Special Events. - There are times of the year that you should be taking the opportunity to capture clients. New Year, Valentines, Easter/Spring Break, Thanksgiving, Halloween, St.Patricks Day....and of course your Anniversary every year. Send out direct mail offers to your clients as well as new customers offering them a special offer of some type. #4 Birthdays - Your clients would love to get a birthday postcard from you, it shows that you remember them and who doesn't like receiving gifts. So an offer that they can redeem on the MONTH of their birthday would be appreciated by them. #5 Welcome - Do you take the time to send your new clients a thank you card for choosing to come to your salon. Maybe a comment card they can fill out about their experience at your salon and a discount on their next visit within the next 60days. If they didn't buy a package on their first visit, it will entice them to come back and do so. People that bought a package on their first visit, i'm sure will have used it in the next 2 months and can use the coupon to renew at a discounted rate. #6 Referrals - Your customers enjoy tanning at your salon, it's not a chore, it's a luxury and they chose your business as the place they will spend their money. if they didn't like you, they wouldn't be there. So offering them a referral card to bring in someone new (word of mouth) is always favoured and has better response because their friends told them to. Put the cards on the bed by form of a fold over business card. Leaving them on a table in the corner or on the wall will not get as much attention as cards left directly on the bed that they physically have to pick up and read and move each and every time they tan. It will stand out in their head that you have a referral program. Offer them something free for sending a new customer and watch them start referring everyone. Remember, everyone loves something for free. All of these are simple methods of what you can implement into your marketing campaign for your business to increase your profits and customer retention. I can help you produce all of the above, feel free to contact me by email if you have any questions or need a quote. info@chronosmarketing.com

Snail mail and news print I would think would be last resorts in these times. Before any marketing is tried , Be sure your house is in order. Clean, Running at top speed , and all GOOD people behind your sales counter. Ninety percent of my new clients are from customer referrals. Constant contact is a great resourse to use. Been useing them for 2 years now. The free tan cards also work great, But don't spread them out all at one time. Do 100 this month and 50 the next, 50 more ..... Put on your card 1 per person or can be use only one time per calander year. When coming up with ideas for specials, Be sure to watch whats happening around you. I have been really tracking my retail vs gas prices for the last 3 years. A great BOGO wont even workwhen gas peeks above $2.75

If you are "happy" with spending $5k for 3 salons combined a YEAR, more power to you. Imagine if you actually advertised how much you'll make. I spend almost $5k in advertising for 1 FTW event for 1 of the salons....that's just 1 event, not talking about per year. Not everyone does the email thing or does text messages. Older people don't. 40+ are the most likely NOT to have email or subscribe to text broadcasts or email blasts. BUT every single person has a mailbox. Just so you know...Snail mail is STILL a lot more successful than emails & text messages. Just thought i'd let you know. In case you were planning on not using it because you are trying to keep with the times vs. actually trying something that is successful and what is good for business. It's all about making money to me, so i advertise with whats successful, not what's cool. $30 a month to bring in $300 sales. Great ratio towards how much spent to bring in a certain %. But i'd rather spend $3000 and bring in $15k-$20k. I look at the money i make at the salon with the advertising i spend. That's what is important to everyone that is in business for themselves. Not saying you have to spend it all on print marketing...just get your name out there, setup marketing campaigns for your business to help better your business and make the public aware that you are there.

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Marketing your business If I knew I could spend $5,000 in advertising and turn $10,000 in increased revenues I would do it in a heartbeat. Most of us see advertising as a crapshoot. I have spent money on grocery store receipt coupons, Money Mint Magazine coupons, radio spot discount coupons, flyers with very little to show for it. Please somebody e'mail a copy of the silver bullet for success in advertising/marketing. :) |

Rep Power: 46 | Re: Marketing your business theres no magic marketing and no marketing you should do or have to do....the key is being consistent and dumping what aint generating clients. the marketing is only as good as the offer...if you spend 3k on a campaign and your offer is only 10% a month..you probably just wasted 3k. the advertisement is to get their attention...the offer brings them in! DIN recently did a postcard campaign for my 10 yr event the offer was 10 days $10 unlimited...it was a huge success. we also sent a mass email, was in 2 local papers spotlight on business section (full page free) and sent the offer thru our text club, myspace and facebook..3 day only event that generated 3 weeks of kaos and record numbers...this is our best year ever and dont see it going back to the way it was..which wasnt bad! and its all because of the offer..over 100 new clients in about a week..our advertising rep said our 2 comps dont understand how im so busy :)

Thanks for the info. Enlighten me on the "text club" you refer to. Is that a service you subscribe to? Also, is your Myspace and face book page set up for informational pages just like a web site? Have you done 5 days for $10.00 or only the $10.00 for $10.00? I'm looking for a starting place here. I don't have a Myspace, or Facebook page set up nor texting option. How would you start out?
