Huh? Then quote them instead of an open question.

Why not? One supports a local store, the other not. Same difference. Both a specialty products that one does not generally pick up at every store in town. If I want a good tanning lotion I would go to a salon. If I wanted a fish/pet I would go to a pet store, not Costco.

Re: Where to buy lotions?

What is comes down to is this. You "Salon Owners" don't want ANYONE buying lotions from places other than your salon. There was even someone asking about a home tanning bed and she/he got jumped all on being told not to buy one and to go to a salon to tan. You act as if they were taking business away from you specifically! I will not take part in this thread any longer. It's ridiculous, seriously. I will state for the record once more for those of you able to read and comprehend English.

I now purchase my lotion from a supplier. The same supplier a salon owner I know orders her lotions from.
I have purchased lotions online in the past and compared them to the "salon purchased" lotions and they were exactly the same.
It is NOT illegal to sell lotion online!

Enjoy the debate!

Awwwww, he gave up. I dont mind people buying lotions from elsewhere at all, in fact most here dont have a problem with customers buying lotions elsewhere. What we DO have a problem with is that some lotions online are legit, and those are sold under retail price but a SUBSTANTIAL amount. They have no over-head to pay so they can do that and make a profit. So that undercuts salon owners. You may have been "lucky" buying online, I used to keep a few bottles of counterfeit lotions under the counter to show clients. They do exist.

You should operate a business some day. Would open your eyes.

Re: Where to buy lotions?

Seriously, this is getting JUST A LITTLE BIT RIDICULOUS. It's a free country and people can think, say, and do what they want (and yes, this includes buying tanning lotions online).

I understand that salon owners are trying to earn a living and make money from their lotion sales yadda, yadda, yadda. You say that salon owners and staff members are 'educated' and provide 'expert advice' on tanning and tanning products and thus are justified in charging exorbitant prices for lotions. As much as this is a good tactic, it's extremely hard to take you seriously when certain members of your 'highly educated and knowledgeable' community make statements like (and I quote) "I had a tanner order lotions online and get ecoli poisoning ..."

Good try, but that is physically impossible and may very well be one of the stupidest assertions I've ever heard. For an infection to occur, a number of E. coli bacterium must physically be swallowed by a human being. (most common causes are eating undercooked ground beef, drinking contaminated water, drinking unpasteurized milk, and working with cattle.)

Basically there is absolutely no way your client could have gotten an E. coli infection from ordering a tanning lotion online. It was a good idea to make up a story like that, but your client could have literally rubbed a bottle full of pure E. coli bacteria on her skin and still there would have been no possible way for her to become infected.

Don't attack me about this. I only said in the past I had purchased lotions online and compared them to "salon purchased" products and they were EXACTLY the same thing. No old smell, exactly the same color, consistency, and results.

I know how the salon business works, trust me. Just because I signed up here within the past week does not make me clueless. I got special prices when I purchased from my friends salon, as did all her other customers.

I'm not trying to be rude, just don't attack someone for saying they compared online lotions to "salon purchased" lotions.

Once again, to make sure we're clear here. Now I order my lotion from the same supplier a local tanning salon owner does!

When someone tries to educate you why do you feel they are attacking you? You say just because it is sold on ebay and discount stores online then it must be legal. You are completely wrong. This is no different to someone that buys stolen goods or fake rolex watches. It many cases it is worse. The problem is this is a very costly and time consuming process for the manufacturers. There are also patented issues, if the lotion company doesn't have their formula patented they can't ban ebay from selling their product and in turn sue ebay, where they would make a lot of money in court. I've heard many are in the process of doing this. To go sue someone that is selling their product from a zip code that leads to a garage in 90 degree weather somewhere is costly and the manufacturer would lose a lot of money. I had a client buy a bottle of a product online and bragged about the price he got it for. I brought out a 2007 and 2008 catalogue to show him it was last sold in 2006. There was another story about the manufacturer that had tainted product (ecoli) from a flood and sold out to an insurance company (to clean out the place) who then sold it to a discount site and landed the contaminated product in the hands of unknowing tanners. When it comes to my body for what I eat and put on it I take very good care. :)
I hope this helps you some.

Two things here fish, we do not like home tanning beds because they can't be regulated. when your 13 yr old daughter sneaks her friends in the house to tan and they get repeated sunburns you give us professionals a bad name. Suddenly when they have health problems later on somehow the media, family and Dr.'s forgets it was some incompetant parent and suddenly wants to shut down professional salons.

The second thing is I guarantee you don't buy the lotions our upscale salon sells online.

DiveringTan that is a true story about the contaminated product. You can probably contact someone at Tanology and see that it is documented. There might even be a lawsuit. There was a story in a magazine about it as well.

I agree this is a free country and may you buy all your lotions online. :) We are not forcing you to make good decisions here but we are going to put them out there for your reading pleasure if nothing else. :)
