Re: Merchandising Lotions

I just re setup my lotion shelves by category. its more convienient but it looks better when they are grouped by manufacturer.

Re: Merchandising Lotions

I have 9 glass shelves on my tanning lotion display cabinet.
The shelves are as follows:
Accelerators only (1 shelf)
Bronzers (5 shelves)
Bronzers w/ coolant (1 shelf)
Bronzer Tingle (1 shelf)
Bronzers with Blush (1 shelf)
I have small acrylic signs that are a little over an inch tall, like the kind you see in a jewelry store, placed on each shelf indentifying the product type.
Because we offer 5 shelves of bronzers I break them up by prices.
Example: Synergy Brown Envy, So Gorgeous, Body Candy, etc. would be on one shelf.
$25.00 retail and under on a shelf.
above $25.00-$35.00 on a shelf.
above $35.00-$45.00 on a shelf.
above $45.00-$55.00 on a shelf.
everything above $55.00 on a shelf.
The sign on the shelf of our expensive lotion is on the top shelf. It reads premium bronzer or premium tingle.

Re: Merchandising Lotions

it seems like everything that is being made now has bronzers in it. We carry California Tan, Australian Gold, Synergy, Designer Skin, Devoted Creations, and 1 or 2 more.

Re: Merchandising Lotions

I disagree on several points.
Quote:
Reorganize Your Displays:
Forget stocking brand names together. Group the lotions by product types: Regular products, Tingle products, Bronzing products, Multi-Effect/Specialty products, and After Exposure Tanning Products. Arrange them on the shelf by different steps. Focus each tanner on the section of products that match their individual needs eliminating sections of products that they should not consider.
I have tried grouping several different ways. Most effective for us is grouping by brand.

Quote:
Example: A new tanner comes into your salon for the first time. You can direct them to the Regular Product - Step One area, eliminating all other products from consideration by explaining as their tan advances, they will then use a more advanced product. After helping the new tanner with a “beginner” tanning product, you can then direct them to the After Exposure Tanning Product section to explain the benefits of using an After Exposure Tanning Product between tanning sessions.

Talk to your client. Ask probing open questions. Recommend 3-4 different products based on their wants/needs.

Quote:

Clearly Label Your Displays:
Allow tanners to help themselves.
Read as: Steal or shoplift. Protect your inventory!

Quote:
In the middle of tanning season with hundreds of tanners visiting your salon daily, you often can’t get beds cleaned fast enough, much less spend 5 minutes explaining tanning products. You need to develop clear shelf labeling that lists the product type/step with a description like: “Tingling Products that gives instant results designed for advanced tanners”. By clearly labeling each section of products, the tanners can help
Quote:
themselves when you can not help them personally.

Read as: Let them steal or shoplift. Hello? Protect your inventory!
Quote:
Stock Less Products on Your Displays!
Can you explain every product you stock? How about 1/2 of the products you stock? You can never stock every tanning product, so you have to make choices. The number of tanning products & lotion brands you stock is up to you but I recommend that you should stock no more than 15 to 20 tanning products. You need to have 2 to 4 products per product type with different price points and fragrances to appeal to different tanners. The products you stock depends on the salon you run. If you are a “hands on” owner that likes selling lotions, then stock a wide variety. If you have a large number of employees, stock less to make it easy for them to clearly explain every product to customers.

~GSK Resources
The 80/20 Rule rules. 80% of your sales will come from 20% of your product. So stock 5 times as many different quality products as you would normally expect to sell. (I carry about 160 different lotions.)

Make a lotion statement. Fill your shelves with product selection but don't go deep (just 1 or 2) on back stock. Go deeper with the best selling product (6-8 inventory). Replenish as needed. Buy in extraordinary promo deals to 2x-4x normal inventory levels. Turn your inventory.

My background includes a stint as a department store Buyer. I have also owned other speciality retail operations. It's important to carry the right product mix in the right quantities and promote sales. As trends come, move quickly to advantage.

Re: Merchandising Lotions

Good points Jim. I also train my staff that the lotion sale doesn't begin in front of the lotion display. It begins as soon as you meet the customer.

By that I mean, ask questions. First, do you have lotion? some variation on this opens the door to discussing lotions. If they are receptive to lotion purchase, what do they like about the lotions they have used? Scent? Feel? Tingle? Bronzer? Price range? Gather as much information about what they like as you can. Also, find out what they don't like.

This isn't Walmart. I don't want to depend on packaging to catch the customer's eye. I pay my staff to be the experts on lotion. I don't really care where the lotions are on the shelf or how they are arranged for the customer's point of view. It is for my employees to be able to find what they are looking for quickly. Just like Jim said, recommend lotion, but I like to keep it simple. I suggest 2. More than that seems to confuse them.

If a customer has to go to a shelf and pick up a lotion, my employee isn't doing their job.

Re: Merchandising Lotions

Indeed, I would never let the customers help themselves, wowwww neverrrrrr!

And the eye wants something too, so we organize them by brand also.

We have a leaflet with all the lotions and their qualities at the counter. That way the employee can ask questions and point out a few options before getting the bottles.
