I have been tanning now for a long time and have some questions on the bronzers vs. accelerators. I swim a few days a week and shower every day. I find it hard to keep a bronzer (quality products) to stay on me, it seems that they wash off. Is there something, maybe an accelerator that won't wash off and give me a dark color and keep it for a while? Maybe I shouldn't use bronzers at all? Can someone give me some info in your experience with bronzers or just accelerators? Thank a bunch !!

I suggest as a tanner you visit the www.iamtan.com, this site is geared toward indoor tanning industry professional not tanners.

To not be completely rude, the answer to your question depends on the product you are using.

"Bronzer" is an ingredients found within indoor tanning products that has either DHA, Cosmetic Bronzers or Both.

DHA is a sugar cane based ingredients that works to "stain" the upper levels of your skin brown. The more DHA in the product the darker you get. It can not be washed off. Once the stain is set in the skin then it's very hard to remove.

Cosmetic bronzers are coloring that do not bond themselves to the upper level of your skin. They wash off very easily thus the term "cosmetic".

The term ”accelerator” has so many different means for so many different products.

Basicly it means a beginner level tanning product with not “effect” ingredients.

DHA will react with chlorine - the pamphlet they give you at mystic tan (bronzer + DHA solution in aloe base) advises you not to swim in chlorine or hottibs at all because of the reaction with DHA

topical bronzer will wash off as well - causing an embarrasing beige cloud around you in the pool!

I woudl avoid any bronzer (whether it be coloring and/OR DHA/erythrulose) and stick to a quality tanning lotion without any of these ingredients . . good luck!

Thank you for your input !! Galmarama or any one else- can you suggest a quality tanning lotion without the ingrediants of a bronzer. I love the designer skin products and john abate. I don't want to give up swimming, it's awesome exercise ! I also don't want to give up my tan either. Thanks for the info !!!

have your salon help you pick out a lotion - be careful & read the ingredients though - you are looking for dihydroyacetone and or erythrulose - these are the self tanning active ingredients that you DONT want

Just a heads up - sometimes, even if the lotion is NOT marketed as a bronzer or self tanner (DS' sheer wisdom - perfect example, has DHA but not called a dual bronzer like most of their DHA products) it will have one or both as an ingredient - be careful & good luck - your local salon shoudl be able to steer you straight!

and avoid buying anythingon the 'net - gawdnows whats in those lotions!

I read that as hobbits! Poor little hobbits can't go swimming with you if you used a bronzer. So not fair.

Walnut oil or Bata Carotene. The problem with them is that it may leave you looking orange.
