Ok I know we have all seen this before, and I did do a search but I can't find my answer! Ok I had a couple come in today with haiwiian tropic stuff from walmart, now on the back of the lotion it says safe for high and low pressure beds, like WTF, I told her no you can't use ti in the beds blah blah blah, and they both are like it says right here you can use it in the beds blha blah blah, so i let them use it, I didn't think it was worth arguing, but oh holy **** that stuff was hard to get off, how can I handle this when someone comes in with a " forbbiben lotion" thats says it safe to use in the beds!!! Please people the truth here, can you use them in the beds or not.

No way. Those are your beds they are tanning in. It is up to you to decide which lotions that can be used in them.

i know and I tried to tell them no you can not use this lotion in my bed, and i pointed out our forbbiden lotion list, but no she jsut kept arguing me saying that yes I can its says on the bottle I can. it was like talking to a child, like what am I suppsoed to say, I don't give a flyin fart what it says you can't use it in my beds! What I want to know is, when someone comes in with a bottle that says it safe to use in the beds, what do I say, so it doesn't result in an argument.

Some people will tell you to ban anything unless it is bought in your salon. I disagree with this. If it's indoor tanning lotion then fine. I woule rather they purchase from me. But you can't force them too. At least you still have them as a tanner. I use lotion sold by salons like mine. But when I go out of town I use the lotion at the salon. If I brought in lotion that said safe for indoor tanning units and they would not let use that lotion. That salon lost me as a tanner.

Then tell her you are going to have to charge her double in order to pay for the damage that it does to your acrylic.

I have had that problem at the salon where I work.
I have read those "safe to use in tanning bed" lotions, and we always check for mineral oil, even if it doesnt have mineral oil we still tell them they can't use it and we HOLD their lotion behind the counter while they tan....they don't always like that....but when we explain to them that acryllics are just TOO expensive to replace then we usually get some understanding nods out of them.

You just tell them that you cannot be sure with those types of lotions, if you lose their business, so be it...its a crappy situation, but they are your beds, and that bottle of lotion cost them like $5 not thousands like it will cost you to repair the beds.

All of my clients have understood. I show them the cracked arylic that I have displayed behind the counter. I inform them about skincare. Let them know that if those lotions are doing that to my acrylics imagine what it is doing to your skin. It only takes a few mintues to teach the client simple skincare.

I have recently revised my Client Data Card to include that they understand that I have the right to approve or disapprove of any lotion they bring in. If they use any banned substance in my beds, I will give them a refund for unused tanning. My place, my rules! I'm the one paying the rent, for the equipment, the insurance, etc.

Education is the key....I think if it says "safe" for in door tanning (which it should be) then let them use it and explain the difference in using a better QUALITY SALON lotion. I don't sell all the lotion products that are out there (who could?) so I just make sure it is not a Bananna Boat SPF 45 or something similar. Once you get your clients hooked on something like DS, or Fiji it should be easy to get them away from the crap they would like to use...Toss 'em a bone....give them a sample packet of some GOOD S**T to try...it will cost you up front (packett $) but in the end you look like you really "care" about them and they get a freebie. I comp a bottle for my employee's so when this occurs and even better scenario is this..."Why don't you try my personal stock today, it's fabulous lotion, I think you'll really like it." Clients have gotta be stroked..can't sell the tans or the lotion without the bodies.
