I was wondering what the tanning experts recommend for outdoor tanning... The salon I go to doesn't have any SPF or anything displayed.
I am a teacher and will be done with school in 24 days! hooray! I live 5 minutes from the beach so I pretty much live there with a book during June, July, and August. What do you guys suggest I use when tanning outdoors? |

Find a Salon Certified by Smart TaN International. They will be able to provide you with a skin type analysis. From that you should be able to determine the minimum of SPF protection you and your students will need for the upcoming summer months. An SPF 2 will be quite unsufcient unless you are of African decent. For most, a minimum of SPF15 full-spectrum is recommended.

As a postscript: I recently had a client who returned from a tropical cruise. He told me that they were selling California Tan SPF products. Very expensive, but now he wants me to order them for him so thst can enjoy his summer here! Look into it!

I believe that the salon I go to is Smart Tan Certified.... or maybe it's Indoor Suntanning Association? anyway, there are about a million certificates hanging up on the walls. But they have never skin-typed me and I've been going there for 4 years.
They do carry Cal Tan products but the only SPF I've seen is the Lip SPF 25. I'll have to ask them today if they will order me something for outdoors. |

I know people say it is bad to go out in the sun without SPF's, but lately, I have not used SPFs outside this season.
I have an incredible base tan, not to sound snotty, lol, but I am from Sicilian decent...hehe and have also been laying out whenever I get the chance, without using sunscreen...and I have never gotten burned at all, just darker. I have used Coconut Colada and AG's accelerator outside... The Uv Index at its highest was I believe 8 or 9 here so far, so theres not much more to go up to right? There is a 10+ I believe Should i still use SPF's this summer? I will def. use heliotherapy spf 8 on my face, but what about my body? thanx ~melty~ |

I don't use outdoor sunscreen much, a bit on my face and shoulders. I am concerned about the safty of applying it to my skin. I am old enough to remember well the PABA blowup! PABA was used in most suncreens and was recomended by the cancer society and the government. PABA caused CANCER! and speedy up the growth of cancer, PABA was quietly taken off the market, with no mention or apology from the cancer soceity or govenment. They proved they can't be trusted. Sad but true.
Beta carotine has also been linked to speeding up cancer growth and it is even worse if you smoke. |

well I asked the girls at the salon today if they could order CalTan SPF lotions and they looked at me like I was nuts. They suggested that I buy AG SPFs in the store. Too bad I hate the smell of AG or I would take their advice......
