I only ask them to see thier lotion to make sure it is safe for the beds.

If they don't have lotion with them it gives me the opportunity to give them the sample of the month. I would never say they could not tan, but it gets them in the habit of thinking about it and remembering it. I am in a small rural town and so the only competition I have is a 3 bed video store that carries off brand stuff I have never heard of. If they buy a repeat from somewhere other than me, I can't stop that... But I can make sure they are not using outdoor lotions on my beds and each bottle they buy from me has my store's label on it.

Rio...
It was a great idea wasn't it... I am sooo glad that someone shared it with me!

My question is this: What if I walked into your salon and you asked what lotion I was using today. I said "Marshmallow" or "DST" or whatever, something that your salon does not carry... What would your response be then? I am only curious because you said that every tanner has to show their lotion... so what happens if you don't like what you see? =)

Excellent question! Well first of all, if a tanner has a lotion I'm not familiar with, I ask more about it. I like to see the bottle so I can read the ingredients. I look for harmful substances that can damage acrylics. I look to see what the tingle stimulant is. It's for their protection as well as mine. Now... if it's a reputable brand, but I haven't had much contact with it, I ask what the lotion does, is it working for them, do they like it, where did they get it, how much did they pay.... stuff like that. I am genuinely interested on many levels. First, I like to know what's out there and where they're getting it from. Second, if it's a pirate source... that's helpful too. I got wind of a new beauty supply in the area and on Saturday myself and another employee are planning on shopping there to see for ourselves.

My clients and I have a good repore, I am not condescending or b!itchy when I ask... I am inquisitive and polite. People don't mind telling you things.
