What I tell them about our every day lotion that we offer contains no spf's,no skin bleach or exfoliants. A lot of lotions over-the-counter have these three elements that can slow down the tanning process..

a lot of the over the counter lotion has a spf, and it's not a large enough amount to be advertised on the bottle, but still spf, not god if you are tanning. Besides, your lotions are professional, they contain better quality ingredients, thus you don't have to use as much so in the long run you are saving money. It's not watered down.

In most lotions at home the main ingredient is mineral oil. Explain to your customer that yes this makes the skin moist but it does not rehydrate the skin. Which after tanning this is what needs to happen.. That is why even though they use this lotion at home everyday their skin is still dry. I have a bottle of ON Serene sitting on my counter and after I explain this to customers I send a sample home with them. 8 out of 10 times the next time they are in they buy a bottle. I hope this makes sense and since I had moisturizers explained like this to me I have been able to sell it to my clients.

You can also tell them that the moisturizer they are using was not made for an indoor tanner's skin. A moisturizer made by an indoor tanning manufacturer is made specifically to enhance the UV effects from tanning in addition to keeping the skin hydrated and moisturized. When a tanner uses a product that was not made for a tanner's skin, they are actually preventing the UV lamps from tanning their skin to it's fullest extent. The person who moisturizes their skin with a different product will probably be the same person who gripes that they aren't getting any darker. If they truly want to get their deepest, darkest tan and get it faster than ever before... they need to use a product that is specifically designed and forumulated to hydrate, moisturize and feed their UV exposed skin. Why bother tanning at all if all you're gonna do is hamper the effects by using the wrong product? You wouldn't bake a cake with motor oil, would you? I mean it's oil... right?
