Been there, done that - 3 times. The last time I was in the hospital I had tubes in me like crazy for other reasons and even though I don't remember it, I wrote down "I NEED AFRIN". Probably one of THE hardest things to break free of.

Here's how I've done it: Take several days where you just don't have to function. Try not to lie down - sleep with 2-3 pillows under your head. It will take several days for your nose/system to "get used" to not having it and I swear the withdrawal is worse than nicotine, but if you JUST DON'T USE IT for several days, you eventually don't need it. You're just freaking miserable those few days and you probably won't sleep. Stock up on some TiVo/Netflix/books.

I have Flonase now for when I have a stuffed nose and need something that's not "addicting". So far I've had to use it twice in 8 months and it seems to do the trick w/o getting "hooked".

My very overly religious mother and brother who have never had alcohol, nicotine or illegal drugs got hooked on Afrin. It's the devil!

I am on day 4 now with the Prendisone/Flonase and Sudafed and I feel like a champ thus far, you are right on the sleeping thing, it's the hardest, but I got through it. I am hoping by mid week as I wean myself off of the Prendisone all will be well.

So far so good...

He's trying to kick the OTC stuff, NOT the prescibed meds.
