I have used Glucomannan. It works. I don’t know why they would have Glucosamine in a weight loss pill, but it’s great for joint pain. Chromium - is an essential trace mineral that aids in glucose metabolism, regulation of insulin levels, and maintenance of healthy blood levels of cholesterol and other lipids it has been used in helping to control appetite There have been a few case reports of adverse effects following high dose chromium supplementation. In one, a 24-yr-old female body builder developed rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition causing muscle and kidney toxicity, after ingesting 1200 mcg of chromium picolinate over 48 hours. This is 6-24 times the daily recommended allowance of 50-200 mcg. Another case of toxicity following chromium picolinate ingestion (1200-2400 mcg for 4-5 months) involved a 33-yr-old woman who was taking it for weight loss. The supplement increased her blood chromium levels to 2-3 times normal and caused anemia, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, and renal failure. Vanadium - is thought to play a role in metabolism of carbohydrates and may have functions in cholesterol and blood lipid metabolism. In diabetics, vanadium supplements may have a positive effect in regulating blood glucose levels. Limited information is available about vanadium toxicity. Traditionally, vanadium is considered quite safe in humans (because of its poor absorption). However the safety of the use of vanadium supplements for long periods remained uncertain. It is thought that prolonged exposure to excessive vanadium could cause muscle cramps, emotional depression, and damage to the nervous system and other organs Hoodia gordonii cactus - I'm not aware of any published reports of side effects after short-term use of hoodia. There are no published long-term studies on the safety of hoodia. People with diabetes should be particularly cautious. Because hoodia tricks the brain into thinking that it has enough blood sugar, it's possible that a person's blood sugar could drop dangerously low while taking hoodia. With the regular hunger mechanism turned off, the normal warning signs may be suppressed -- until it's too late. Glucomannan (I use this.) it is a polysaccharide (long chains of simple sugars, primarily mannose and glucose) that is classified as a soluble fiber. Because glucomannan can absorb up to 200 times its weight in water, it has been used as a dietary supplement to promote weight loss (via increasing feelings of fullness). Glucomannan is derived from several plants, but the primary source is an Asian plant called Konjac. In a double blind study (the only kind I would trust) 2 groups of 25 severely obese people underwent very low calories diet therapy for 3 months (with or without a 4 gram/day glucomannan supplement). The results showed that the glucomannan group had a significant loss of body weight and fat mass compared to the group receiving diet therapy alone. The glucomannan group also had a more pronounced change in lipid status and carbohydrate tolerance. In another study, 20 obese people were given 1 gram of glucomannan with 8 ounces of water 1-hour prior to each meal for 2 months (versus a placebo). Subjects were instructed not to change their eating or exercise patterns. Results showed a significant weight loss (5.5 lbs) as well as a drop in serum levels of total and LDL cholesterol (15-20mg/dl) in the glucomannan group. ( Childhood obesity treatment: double blinded trial on dietary fibres (glucomannan) versus placebo. Padiatr Padol. 1993;28(5):133-6. 9. Vita PM, Restelli A, Caspani P, Klinger R. Chronic use of glucomannan in the dietary treatment of severe obesity. Minerva Med. 1992 Mar;83) Like other soluble fibers, glucomannan has the potential to bind with and reduce the absorption of certain nutrients – so a daily multivitamin supplement may be advisable for individuals consuming high doses of glucomannan on a regular basis. In high doses, glucomannan may lead to diarrhea, bloating and flatulence – but cutting back the dose relieves these unpleasant side effects. Glucosamine -There are numerous European studies showing a clear benefit of glucosamine supplements for relief of joint pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. By the way the Arthritis Foundation has stated that it cannot recommend glucosamine supplements as a treatment for osteoarthritis, but this stand has not stopped the Foundation from accepting financial support from the producer of the best selling brand of glucosamine supplements on the market – Rexall Sundown’s Osteo-Bi-Flex. Go finger. Occasional symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort have been noted, but no significant adverse effects have been noted with glucosamine supplementation. Diabetics may want to exercise a degree of caution when using glucosamine supplements, as there have been several animal studies and one small human pilot study that have suggested an increase in blood sugar levels during regular glucosamine consumption (though most of the animal studies have used injections of glucosamine). |

Its interesting that the FDA pulled ephedra but not Ritalin, Viagra, & Wellbutrin. Ephedra-155 deaths Ritalin - 174 deaths Viagra2,294 deaths also known as: Sildenafil Citrate Wellbutrin -1,352 deaths also known as: Bupropion Hydrochloride, Zyban, Zyntabac, Amfebutamone |

However, the FDA has the right to pull a supplement if it poses a significant or unreasonable risk. The FDA couldn't prove this with low doses of ephedra. So dietary supplement manufacturers are allowed to resume selling its whole herb ephedra product with less than 10 mg of naturally occurring ephedrine alkaloids per daily dose. |

When people decide to start taking supplements they should first find out the side effects, the accurate dosage, interactions with prescription or OTC drugs, along with other supplement(herb, minerals, and vitamins) and pre-existing health conditions In the event of someone taking a supplement such as ma-huang with a pre-existing health, condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or any other hart disease issues could result in a fatality not because of the supplement, but because of the interaction of the two. Just because it’s “natural” doesn’t mean it’s safe. |
