I had looked into opening a Curves or some variation of it. The equipment and franchise fee together, the total cost to open a Curves outside of site improvements is $29,500. That is a pretty low figure for most businesses to open on. You can of course to it yourself for a lot less, there are equipment dealers out there who would be glad to sell you the same type of package for about $20,000 and give you a few days training in how to make it all work. The goal of 1000 members for a Curves is pretty high unless you are in a large market. Most of them work in the 300-400 range. Most Curves are $29 a month unless you are in a large market. So 300 members at $29 a month totals $8700 a month in drafts. They do a huge chunk of their business on monthly drafts with about a $50 average sign up fee and a 1 year contract. They do some other add on business with Curves clothes, some diet items and such but it is pretty limited to the Curves workout for revenue. Back when I looked at it really hard you could not do tanning with Curves and that is the hook I wanted to add. They have softened on that now.

On the topic of Curves not being able to stay only for women anymore, lets look at both sides of the coin. How many women who want Curves to be women only would be upset if Cuts had opened first and been men only? A men only club would have upset a lot of women and rightfully so. I completely understand why a woman would want a womens only club and truthfully I have no problem with their reasoning at all. On the flip side mens only, whites only, etc only clubs have been getting blasted for years and losing so why should a womens only club drawing fire surprise anyone? I think the way to do it is to have a Curves Club on one side of a space, a Cuts Club on the other side of the space and a tanning salon in the middle with all being hooked together the way to go. You can offer seperate workout spaces that cater to both sexes and offer different type of equipment for different effects and each space would be worked by the appropriate sex of employee who would help each person get what the workout they need. The tanning would of course be for both. Women and men, or Curves and Cuts have different equipment packages for the different sexes so this would work. Just my opinion.
