MY SIS-IN-LAW IS 3 MOS PREGNANT AND CONSIDERING TANNING. IS THIS SAFE? I TOLD HER MAYBE SHE SHOULD WAIT UNTIL THE BABINO IS BORN. YOU SEE SHE IS VERY IMPATIENT....SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

I don't see any prob with it if she wants to do it. Tell her though to go in mornings when beds are cool...heat is an issue ...same as hot baths and hot tubs...

My wife is pregnant and has not been able to tan one time since we opened our salon. Her doctor told her (as well as read in magazines) that she should not tan because it would raise her body temperature too high.

I have had a few pregnant women tan up until almost due date just keep them in a cool room tell them to use the fan and get out if they feel hot or uncomfortable . I also always tell them it's their dr.s descression . but if they over heat it can cause pre term labor so keep coooool and you'll be fine

I spent EVERY DAY on the beach during my entire last pregnancy.... between 5-7 hours per day (had two young ones already and a hubby working 3rd shift at the time).....

Quite a bit more exposure than ever gotten inside a tanning bed I can assure you ~

There is no danger to the baby with the exceptions as stated.... really HOT beds (ambient temps over 100 degrees) are not good for the mom or the baby.... but the actual UV rays never 'reach' the fetus.... and infact, tanning in moderation will help both mom and baby and their need for Vitamin D 3 .....

Common sense (a thing that when left up to many MDs is in short supply) is the key here....

If she has NO BASE TAN at this time.... she will need to go very slowly at first.... Hormones in the first tri are raging ---- and could lead to her being extra sensitive to UV.....

Any expectant mom needs to be well hydrated - - - and this is an issue for tanners as well.... So water before and after each session should be a given.

Depending on what part of the country she lives in ---- indoor tanning may be her only REAL good source of vitamin D3 and a relaxed smile.....

I'd say she needs to be at a GREAT SALON.... one that really knows their stuff and gives a rat's *** about their clients.... then go for it :)

IT"S HER BODY CORE TEMP that needs to kept constant. I doubt very much that a 20 minute tanning session would raise a persons BODY CORE TEMP beyond normal levels if the room is cool and there's a fan blowing on her. If a doctor ONLY tells a to-be mom not to tan, FIRE HIM! He hasn't told you the important things. NO hot tubs, hot baths, long hot showers or staying out in the heat all day as those things can cause the body CORE TEMP to rise. If she gets a fever from say, the flu, get here to the doctor NOW! As her body CORE TEMP rises, so goes the fetus brain temp and it can't handle much of a rise to stay healthy.

What the majority have said above ^^^ it's her body temp that she needs to keep an eye on. I'm with you Sheila, I lived in California and was at the pool everyday when I was pregnant with my two oldest children. As scub has said, have her tan early in the day while the beds are cool and just don't over do it. :)

interesting i have a new mom t obe tanning as well.. I told her take it slow and try to stay cool...
