During my recent encounter with a friend who tan frequently, I showed her our bed choices we had finally made. She however didn't think it was a good idea to have the "big" beds in the salon 'cause everybody she knew who went into one didn't like it and burnt. She told me it would be a big waste of money and the 25k we were spending would be better off going into buying more "standard" equipment. Is this true? or is this one person's account of a situation. The problem is she is repeatedly drilling this into me. And Im beginning to wonder if this huge bed is worth it. by the way its the Ergoline 600. Any input would be appreciated.

One person's account, period. Those bed's are not for everyone, but they're plenty of people who use them and love them. You'll find that out. When we put our Orbit in it took awhile to get it used regularly. People would try it because of the name and the look, some would not because of the price. Over time, once our regulars did try it they were convinced and we now have a core group of people who only use that bed as well as regulars who do it from time to time. Also, we are the only one's in the area with a bed like that so we draw people from out of town and area specifically for it.Politely listen, she's your friend. But it's your business. Stick with it.

The BIG QUESTION is why would you ever have a tanning bed or booth in your salon that did not tan your clients as dark as they can tan and evenly, in as short and cool a session as possible?Don't you clients want the perfect tan?Or do you use the bate and switch method to trick the client into higher prices by telling them you have better beds but they would need to pay extra to get the best tan, as clients start to complain about your crapy cheeply made beds?ITS CALLED BATE AND SWITCH >>>>>>>ITS THE OLDEST CON IN THE WORLD !Any salon that offers anything less then what will do the whole job from the start is not reputable! Why even have less then the best?SHAME SHAME SHAME

Angie:How are you using your upgrade sunbed? Are you requiring that your clients are able to go for the maximum time in your entry level sunbeds before they upgrade? If, on the other hand, you are putting new clients in the 600, your "margin of error" goes down dramatically. Are you conducting a thorough skin typing (subtyping) on all of your new clients?Don

Angie If promoted and advertised correctly you will make more money on one or two upgrade beds than you will 5 or more basic beds. Your friend is correct not all people will be willing to pay for the upgrade equipment however I've found that has more to do with the ability to afford it than being afraid of burning. As long as your are skin typing your customers you should be fine. I try to start all of my customers on the upgrade beds. You should also make it the first bed you show people and sell it first. If you get people in it they won't want to go back to the basic beds

Bate and switch? I don't think so! You should always offer people choices. When you go to a car dealership do you see only one type of car? Or are there many different cars with different prices. Some will like the small compact, some the lexus convertable. Every industry has an "upgrade". We plan on opening sometime in july (with luck) maybe I will start asking people if they have ever tried an upgrade bed and if they liked it..

July is the worst time to open a salon. If I where you, I would wait to open in January or the place will be empty. You will have to carry the rent through the heart of the slow season without any initial return on your investment. If you have a fat bank account or if the location was too good to pass up then I guess you had little choice. Put the upgrade in at the beginning of the season and save your money to stay afloat for now. Definitey get the upgrade though. It will make you tons more money. Just don't get it in July. Just some realistic advice. Also, make sure you have enough power for all of your equipment.

Your right, I am very scared about the july thing. and yes the location is a no passer upper unfortunatly. Very good strip mall location situated across from an actual mall. Im in the Northwest so our summer doesn't even get going till the middle of july anyway. From the people in the tanning industry who Ive spoken with in the NW, they said our tanning season started really late this year compared to the rest of the nation. said its just now starting to kick in. Plus we only have 4 tanning salons in my town of 90k !! Would august be better?

Oct or Nov. That way your up and running for a few months before the season hits and you can trouble shoot, train, etc...I don't care how good a color your stand up booths give you there are always going to be more people that want to lay down, relax, nap for a short period of time.Your upgrades won't be for everybody, but they'll be for enough both current and future to justify it.
