New salons wont notice any thing because they never had them to start with.

Back when we were all making money, Parents would bring their 15 and 16 year child in with them for home coming, proms and spring break, Thus creating our future tanners.
We have no future tanners now.
So you're saying you can market to a 15 year old but not an 18 year old?

I owned my first salon back in 1991, my salon today, in the same market, has far more tanners and makes about 7 times what my salon in the 90s made.

Here is what has changed, tanning used to be very easy, little to no business acumen required, now you have to know what you're doing or you will fail.

The reason many salons will fail these days is that the industry itself has matured, there are very sharp operators who will eat your lunch every day and leave you starving.

9 out of 10 times, when I ask a salon operator about their swot analysis to see if they have missed anything, they have no idea what I am talking about. 8 out of 10 have no proper business plan!

Of course there will be failure in this industry! It goes hand and hand with lack of business acumen.

All of those high school events and tanners should be marketed for spray tanning .

There are always things that can be done to adjust your business because of regulations, negative publicity and economic times.

Something as simple as bad weather can effect business short term. If you monitor your business running reports evaluating performance you can determine where adjustments should be made. I find that if you aggressively work on things that you can control instead of complaining about things you can't control you can drive the level of success for your salon. Just because your numbers are down does not suggest all salon numbers are down. I find that the difference in how different salons are operated is huge and while some salons maintain or increase sales others will decline. This in most cases can be controlled to a degree based on your business model and how well you execute your plan.

For those operators like kookyguy that are performing at a level that affords increased sales, it is not an accident.
No........STEPHEN, Those under 18 and most 18 year old's have have all been brain washed, and are afraid to tan. And a wise salon owner will not market to them any kind of tanning in todays political climate.
And NO my numbers are not down.
But yours are............. people are tired of all your B.S.

I would have to agree and say this has been the worst year in very many years for me too. The 1st quarter was slightly up and every since then and has been consistently down. I wonder if it is a regional thing or the majority of salons across the country also

I do not think any one is really doing any thing to brag about because some of the offers out there are just plain crazy.
I think some of the bigger chains are just making it on their lotion rebates.

Why do you think your numbers were down and what did you do to counter the dropping numbers?

Lastly, why do you think you failed to get your numbers up?

Unhappy Re: well............

I am new to the industry, but the numbers are way down this year for us. Last year we did just fine, but this year things are not so good. Lotion sales are way down and the number of people coming in the door is down too.

I think the reason for the numbers being down are because of the economy, the bad reputation, the big chains, and all the fitness clubs who have tanning beds in them.

However, I honestly don’t feel that slashing prices is the answer. If we do, WE are essentially paying people to tan. We are also telling everyone that we can afford to slash prices, which is not the case at all. By lowering prices, it lowers the perceived value of our product; once you drop prices it’s hard to bring them up again; we would attract customers who only care about the price and who will not care about our business or our property; in the end, I feel that we would not make much profit but we would work much harder. I think that is the reason that every other salon is closing doors.

If the industry is taking a hit, which I believe it is, than all of us business owners should increase the prices to compensate and not devalue the industry. I think that we need to make our business unique and represent the idea that we care about people and their skin, and that we are providing them with something special.

But what do I know…

If this was the case, we would all be down. I know of many non chain salons that had great years even though they faced all the same things you face.

What did you do this year to counter the slumping numbers? Why do you think your strategy failed this year? What will you be changing in 2016 to ensure you do not have a repeat of 2015?

Re: well............

I was up 40% over last year's October. I've been in business for 15 years.

Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to this game. I didn't switch up anything drastically between this and last year.

So far November looks like it's gonna be par.

There is always a reason the numbers go up or down.
