We are located next to a college so our season starts in September and is over at the end of April. It has been slow to start. The school is probably the only 4 year university with declining enrollment. They have lost ~25% of undergraduates in the last five years. No amount of advertising or specials will overcome that loss of population.

I think the other 2 salons in town are also as our local STC if offering some really low specials not seen in other cities with comparable populations. Our population is around 28,000 and we have 3 tanning salons. I rarely see the college kids anymore, if at all, and our salon is the closest one to them. Didn't pass the 18 year old ban here in Iowa, but all that negative media and surprisingly, how many people think it went through. All they heard was the news of the "probable" ban, but the news never reported anywhere that it didn't pass. |

Actually the salons I work with did very well, most were up as they should be but others held steady against the previous year even though they are all up over 2014. Increases are a little less than in previous years but we are expecting a great 2016 season, thank you for asking. I am also very excited about the very first tanning salon in Thailand opening soon. I have been working with this client for almost 6 years to get this salon open. |

Kookyguy is obviously doing things to drive business in light of what is going on in his market and tanning industry. |

As per norm you are sooo wrong........... Kookys numbers may not reflect any damage, but any time somthing negative happens in our industry it affects us all. New salons wont notice any thing because they never had them to start with. Back when we were all making money, Parents would bring their 15 and 16 year child in with them for home coming, proms and spring break, Thus creating our future tanners. We have no future tanners now.

There are always things that can be done to adjust your business because of regulations, negative publicity and economic times. Something as simple as bad weather can effect business short term. If you monitor your business running reports evaluating performance you can determine where adjustments should be made. I find that if you aggressively work on things that you can control instead of complaining about things you can't control you can drive the level of success for your salon. Just because your numbers are down does not suggest all salon numbers are down. I find that the difference in how different salons are operated is huge and while some salons maintain or increase sales others will decline. This in most cases can be controlled to a degree based on your business model and how well you execute your plan. For those operators like kookyguy that are performing at a level that affords increased sales, it is not an accident.

I am astonished by much of what I read but I keep reading. I am always learning something. I learned that you want to be slapped. |
