Absolutely as all tanning beds will. Are they creating a great tanning experience? No but there are tanners that will go there but the tanner that wants more will not.

PF has a formula to target a specific demographic. They are not trying to compete with tanning salons. They want a specific fitness customer and they are adding perks like stripped down tanning. Be aware of them but do not be afraid of them. If you have the right set up you can offer a commitment membership like STC does very successfully. There are always ways to compete.

As I am always saying this industry requires change to stay ahead of the consumer and evolving industry.
This post is wrong as well.

Re: Joined a Planet Fitness..unlimited tanning

Steve...please explain, in your own thoughts, what exactly a "great tanning experience" is?

Are they creating a great tanning experience? No but there are tanners that will go there but the tanner that wants more will not.

To me, if a customer pays to tan, and leaves happy with the results, is that not a great tanning experience? Or, must caviar and champagne be served while the tanner tans...valet parking? What more, other than a good tan, as a customer, do you expect?

As a salon owner, what are you offering for that 'experience', that you believe PF is not offering?

Also, your comment of 'stripped down' beds is a bit confusing. I, do not consider, Ergoline beds as 'stripped down'...we are not talking 24 lamp beds here at PF.

Your statement, as much you say, confuses me

Good post Blacksun. Steve, in my eyes, lost all credibility years ago with his comments on this and other sites.

Re: Joined a Planet Fitness..unlimited tanning

We had a Planet Fitness open in town a year and a half ago. It hasn't hurt our salon at all- in fact, it probably helped.
Yes, the beds there are brand new, but they are gross. Nobody takes care or maintenances them. There is garbage all over the floor. People that have used them say they've stood on paper towels in the standup!
We have actually gained clients that want to tan without worrying about their health. Some had never tanned before, tried it at the gym, liked it, but wanted a cleaner and nicer salon.

Tanning has evolved beyond just the tan. PF certainly is going to take some tanners in any market. They are not trying to be a tanning salon. They are trying to add value to the fitness center membership.

As a tanning salon it is a good decision to provide a better tanning experience with knowledgable staff, a great lotion selection, a beautiful inviting buying environment and many more options to satisfy your tanning needs.

We now sell the tanning experience not just the tan. If it was just about the tan all any salon would need is base beds.

It is just the same with all consumer products. It is not simply the destination it is the trip that matters. When people chose cars they drive, they all get you where you are going but people want different levels of the trip experience.

PF is not going away, they do not represent the end of tanning salons anymore than Burger King represents the end of more expensive restaurants.

It is a shame that people would rather bash what I post rather than considering the positive and accurate message I try to deliver.

I don't mind because the intelligent hear and understand what I post and agree or disagree but takes a positive post for how it is intended.

Yes Ergoline makes great equipment, what PF uses in no way represents their best.

Thank you for an informed post.

Steve...how more insulting do you want to be?

Are you insinuating, those that disagree with you are not informed beings? Only the intelligent agree with you? Because, that is exactly what I am hearing..Sad.

Been a while since I was on. Wish I could get on more often, but I have several businesses to run and only so much time.
I tried awhile ago to warn against Steve's condescending and masked "fishing" approach to getting business. I suggested instead of disguising himself as "just trying to be helpful", that he either buy an add or truly become more legitimate and detailed
in his posts. It appears some people got it, some didn't. To his credit, a few of his few posts here and there have actually offered some beneficial detail in his comments. I just wish he would take more of that approach vs. the condescending fishing approach. But it depends on which owner he is catering to. The one that knows very little or the one that is knowledgeable but still open to current, progressive thinking. However, to cater to the knowledgeable owner in many cases he will need to take his information level up a couple steps. Hope everyone is doing well, tanning is certainly in a challenging industry.

Hey Bronze1, glad you're doing well.

I too have tried to help Steve in private messaging, but he just refuses to listen to alternative ways to still get where he's going. So, it's not for lack of trying on my part.

However, I'm not going to sit back and let him repeatedly insult the very people I respect.

I kind of disagree w/your comment about who he's catering to. That may have been the case initially, but the monster is growing.

It seems that he is unable to distinguish the difference of newbies that could benefit from help and seasoned vets.

Pretty much every single discussion is therefore hijacked by him and he A$$-U-Me's that everyone is failing and are all nothing but prehistoric dinasaurs that refuse to change their evil ways, therefore requiring HIS help.

It is our job to know and discuss what our competition is doing, etc., this is afterall called Tantalk, but the name should be changed to the Steve Underhill show. If you sign up w/him then your worthy and doing everything correctly, but if not....

Re: Joined a Planet Fitness..unlimited tanning

I've seen some some credible salon owners on here with "big" salons vouch for Mr. Underhill. If I was a new salon I'd at least try his free demographic report and see for yourself. Hating on him hasn't helped in the many many years I've been on these sites. Just useless negative energy imo. Ignore him if you don't like him.
