Rep Power: 22 | NC Under 18 Ban RALEIGH, N.C.--Dermatologists and other health advocates are working again to ban all children from using tanning beds in North Carolina. The House health committee scheduled debate Wednesday on legislation similar to a bill filed two years ago. It passed the House in 2013 but stalled in the Senate. The bill would bar tanning-bed use for everyone under 18. Current law prohibits anyone 13 or younger from using salon equipment unless a doctor gives the child a written prescription, while children 14 to 17 only must have a parent's permission. Bill supporters say young people shouldn't be exposed to doses of ultraviolet radiation they contend increase skin cancer risks. The measure is named in memory of the late Rep. Jim Fulghum, who was a primary sponsor of the 2013 bill. |
