Re: Season off to the worst start in years

I cannot believe the lack of professionalism of this entire thread, no wonder our industry is suffering. We are in Canada, and who ever tells you our industry is thriving is living in their own bubble. I see the big picture, there are only 2 distributors left here, one that is letting a few dozen employees off at the end of this month. In an area where there was once 22 salons, there remains 4. Not all of this is bad business. We just did a huge renovation here, and only have 4 high end beds, the rest is aesthetics and spray tanning and other services. We have multiplied income by 15 times. The days of just tanning are done, no matter what some of these people here preach.

And for the 3000 of us who are no longer in business....
I can only speak to what I know to be true. The salons that are structured and operated to do well are doing very well. Those salons that are dealing with weather events recover as soon as the tanners can get into the salons. There are always going to be salon operators that struggle because they do not adjust for a changing market.

Yes there are a great many salons that are struggling and have been for quite some time. My advice to those operators is to evaluate their operation and determine if they can do a better job marketing their salon and possibly making some changes that have been needed for a long time.

Peach instead of Always talking about how bad things are and that you do not believe in anything that successful salons are doing today, maybe it is time to make some changes yourself to see if it has a positive impact on your business.

I see no harm in you posting here because every forum needs a negative source of information that gives struggling operators validation that their failures are not their fault.

I think operators that are looking for helpful positive information can find it just by taking what you say for what it is worth and finding helpful positive information that help them understand that you can control your level of success or failure.

This is actually proved to be an excellent start to the season. Salon operators are growing, adding new/used equipment and expanding. Chains are growing and the independent operator that is making changes are reaping the benefits.

Peach is harmless and a colorful person in his rants.

Re: Season off to the worst start in years

Tanners rarely stop tanning. Typically they change their tanning habits.
Things that can change a tanners habits, this is a short list.
Negative publicity
Personal economic changes
Personal or family situations
Temporary time restraints.

How they adjust, temporary pause in tanning that can be shortened by how well you stay in touch with that tanner.

Changing from upgrade tanning to more value packages, this is typically temporary and they move back into up grade tanning. If your staff is properly trained.

Sudden fear due to the potential effect of tanning based on media information, this becomes a potential spray tanner if properly marketed and they always migrate back to UV tanning. Consumers have short memories.

It is clear that it is important that you must always market all types of tanners depending on where they fall into how they tan. And don't forget the tanner that simply enjoys tanning no matter what.

This also indicates the importance of having packages and pricing that fits in the life and financial situation of every tanner.

If your salon is not proper structured and operated, everything can have an effect on business and you will not be prepared to adjust or even be structured so that all events have a minimum negative effect.

Being prepared for success is your best defense against failure.

Re: Season off to the worst start in years

My distributor said the same to me- season is off to a slow start, Maybe not everywhere
but that's what she said! Our spring break is a month away and we are not packed like it should be, maybe I should go buy a 30,000.00 bed and eft it for $25.00 per month with no commitment! Come on people, our industry is so devalued it's a joke and those of you saying media isn't effecting us are insane!

Nope! The business is far better in some ways, but only for the few that have a strong business acumen.
As for the beds, only contraction the last few years. Lotions are about the same.

Which two distributors are left in Canada? Off the top of my head I can think of 4.
