The effects of this kind of "education" of our children, is way understated. That is why focusing on fighting the legislation is the wrong strategy. Legislation is driven by public perception. It is a lagging indicator. By then, the public is convinced and they are behind the legislation. You can't stop it then

That is why our ITA and ASA dollars should go into public service announcements and direct marketing. Attack the problem not the symptom.
For now I have to work on curing the symptom.

Maybe so, but as an industry we must learn how to prevent fires, instead of just fighting them. There is too many and too few dollars available to win. We are not and have not been smart when it comes to dealing with our problems.

Robert, thanks for setting me straight on this. I owe the ITA an apology and will be sending my joining fee ASAP. Thanks.

I do agree with Peach that I would rather see them invest in a PR campaign effort telling derms and big pharma to put up or shut up.

As someone who has been in this for 22 years and counting, it has been frustrating to see how we as an industry have approached our PR problems. For most of the past 30 years, our strategy was to "educate" our detractors. Even when it was evident that they were not interested in data or an honest debate about the issues. That put us 15 years behind the game. We have spent the last 15 years with a combined strategy of appeasement along with fighting the legislative battles in all 50 states.

That strategy has failed, continuing that strategy will lead to more failure. No serious PR effort has ever been mounted to put a positive spin on UV light.

You work your A_ _ off , this year and get it tied up in committee; next year it will be right back on the schedule. Losing game.

Don't focus on your enemies; focus your $ on the ones who matter; the millions of potential customers who still have an open mind about UV light.

$10 per month everyone should be a member. 5000 salons at $10 each per month could do wonders.......

Thanks for joining!

We should.begin to think outside the box; imitate strategies that have worked for other industries under attack. Take the NBA for.example.

Re: Taking The Fight To Them Alone If I Have To

So I've been getting quite a bit of support in my effort to kill the Under 18 bill again this year even though ASA has told them we're good with it. Then today I get the following email from the representative who got the bill killed for me last year:

-----Original Message-----
From: Jones, Megan [LEGIS] [mailto:Megan.Jones@legis.iowa.gov]
Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2015 2:51 PM
To: Steve Scott
Subject: Re: Under 18 Tanning Ban

Steve-
Thank you for the email. While I am no longer on the Human Services Committee, I have spoken with the floor manager of the bill. After hearing that many within the tanning industry actually support the bill, I agreed that should it move forward, I would support it. I understand the concerns of the American Cancer Society. That being said, I was also a teenage girl once and this is likely going to only cause teenagers to find a friend with a tanning bed in their home and cause them to tan there, beyond recommended times and twice.
-Megan

Thanks Joe. Good to have you in our corner. With friends like you...

Re: Taking The Fight To Them Alone If I Have To

Perfect example of why the ASA is wrong. It is one thing not fight the under 18 bans if they do not have the money or choose to spend it elsewhere. It is another thing to come out in favor and register in support of an under 18 ban.

They should go study what is happening in England right now. A couple of years ago an under 18 ban was passed and sure enough things were quiet.......for a time. Now there is a movement underway for an under 21 ban.
