Tanning Session Times

You know, this is just a thought; back in the 1980's, tanning beds did not have the very short exposure times that we do now. Most beds were 30 minutes and HP were up to 60 minutes (30 min on each side) Which more closely mimics natural sunlight.

Could this rush to shorter sessions and stronger lamps may have caused some of this backlash against the indoor tanning industry? Should we be going back to the longer sessions instead of what we have done?

Don't get me wrong. I believe that tanning equipment is safe if used properly, but when you get into a open sun 1050 for 8 minutes....

I haves some customers who have upgraded packages in the 12 minute bed, who sometimes use the 20 minute base beds. They say it gives them more time to just relax, and doze off.

Are we saying that a 30 minute 1980's bed has the same impact on your skin as a open sun for 12 minutes? Does anyone really believe that?

FYI-that open sun will toast your buns in 8 mins.

Re: Tanning Session Times

There is no more, backlash or misconceptions regarding indoor tanning than there was 20 years ago.

What there is MUCH more of is free, easy and fast (almost instant) communication of the backlash and misconceptions regarding indoor tanning.

Let's say a local news show does a negative tanning piece, now one of you guys is going to post it on the forums for all to see. For us, we now get to see every negative thing said about tanning, when 20 years ago only the people local to that news show would have seen it.

Everyone I knew, 25 years ago thought indoor tanning was bad for you, myself included, now many people know that tanning in moderation can be healthy. The science is on our side, the timing and politics are not.

In the 50s, 60s and 70s doctors told people not to exercise too much as it was bad for you. Could you imagine an MD saying that now?

As the science comes out more and more, we will be in a better place. The question is, can the industry survive that long? I think it can and will.

I agree with you kooky. Except that the tanning industry survives. That is an open question that depends a lot on the industry. Will It continue to lay down or learn how to fight? Our leadership would make possums proud.

So if you don't think the tanning industry will survive, why are you not moving on to the next business adventure?

My business is 1/2 business, 1/2 hobby. There is still money in it. Just don't know for how long.

If you are so convinced it will succeed, why aren't you starting up Kooky location # 2?

We are not sure in what form it will survive. We opened the first salon with room to grow, we add more equipment each year.
