Re: How do you handle pregnant tanners

When people ask about tanning and pregnancy I tell them it is a personal choice but I recommend they consult with their doctor. I allow use of all beds except our High pressure bed.

Over the years I have had 12-20 women tan while pregnant about 25% of them being nurses. It is kinda funny seeing them come in at 8-9 months.

I have yet to have a Dr. release their patient to tan. I wouldn't even let my wife tan when she was prego. It's just me. If their Dr signs off then by all means I am ok with it.

I am to operate an Educated salon and have an educated staff.. I know that UV has no harm to a Fetus however the heat does.

If that customer miss carries and it has any possibility of hurting my stores image or my stores financial future then that's on me.

The Dr.s note eliminates a lot of the worry

I am all for personal rights and freedoms. If they want to tan..I refer them to a stand up. It's all about choice. I also offer a spray tan twice a month if they keep the uv membership till they deliver. Many take me up on it.

Yeah, it's perfectly fine. Only issue would be temperature, but it's not like they are laying in a 20-30 minute bed anymore. 10-12-15 minutes is good.

The temperature thing is more for hot tubs at like 120-140°, if your tanning bed is getting that hot, then you have serious issues.

Re: How do you handle pregnant tanners

I am so glad I asked this important question because it has revealed that we are not all on the same page. When an old employee told me that she thought someone who was pregnant was tanning, I had to stop and really think about it. I did some research on rules and regulations and could not find a single reference to pregnant clients. I have to tell myself that if tanning isn't bad for you then why would it be bad for a pregnant woman. So for now, I figure I have my client card where they answer the pregnancy question. The way I see it that covers me. I will look into the reason that Iowa requires that question to be on our client card. I guess it kinda fills in line with the new requirement for adding a label on each machine which states "This bed is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18". Iowa didn't pass the under 18 law, did pass this "label" instead. Idiots!
