Its like customer appreciation sales. Every once in a while its great, but for 3 month?

Specials can:

1. Attract new customers

2. Entice existing customers to spend more than they otherwise would

You hit the nail on the head. Marketing should be to generate traffic and new tanners. Offering discounts to tanners already in the salon is tricky. Offering a discount on a startup fee to convert a tanner to a membership is good but a discount on a package that a tanner was already going to buy at regular price is not a good idea. This is why the type of specials you run must be good for stimulating traffic but not be a negative offer for your already active tanners.

Although the post can get buried quickly, when someone comments on it, it goes to the top. I just keep posting or bumping my post. I know how hard it is this time of year to pay for advertising when income is down, so this helps for me anyway.
I am not a fan of tan till the end of year specials. In most cases it lowers the amount of business you can do during those end of year months. On the other hand an upgrade until the end of year special for your existing members works well and rewards your members with something for them. It also gets members to a higher level that they may not normally use.

2. In MANY salons, the "weekend" customer is a different customer than the one that comes during the week. You can look at your statistics in your own salon to see if you follow that trend. That said - this half off SINGLES is intended to appeal to a different customer - the one that is NOT coming to your salon during the week and does NOT have a package.

3. With that same reasoning, I offer half price upgrades one day DURING THE WEEK. This entices the weekday tanner who has a regular package or membership. We make a BIG DEAL of the half-off upgrade day and mention it that day as well as when anyone buys a package/membership. We point out the BEST savings is to use our BEST equipment - High Pressure. We have a HUGE percentage of customers that upgrade that day as a result.

We have used half off SINGLES on weekends for years now - and have attracted a regular clientele who come to us specifically BECAUSE we offer that option.

Agree that with any special, measure and track if it is working for you. With the clients I consult with, few if any haven't have great success with half off singles on weekends.
Happy Hour Thursday for 50% off upgrades. Sunsally uses this special in the most effective way. She also points out that each special targets particular types of tanners.

Who do you believe?
Probably they did not read your whole post and only saw 50% off. A 50% off single session special on a slow day that must be used on that day is just fine.

Markets are different and carefully trying and tracking your packages is important. Also remember contact advertising to your database does not always have to offer a discount. A great reminder that they enjoy tanning and an invitation to stop in can be very effective.

Any effort to create a relationship with tanners will pay off in a positive way.

Why would your high dollar customers buy the expensive package if you are giving it away to your low dollar ones? I how about a free upgrade Friday?

Although we do not give our services away, it works and this is how. It's called economics.
