Re: Slower Months

I actually focus on something else during slow season...improvements. I am a small salon, so I use the slow months to primp, paint and reevaluate. I also, this year, will decide on a different mix of beds as Pa. passed the no tan under 17 law. I have 3 base beds in my 8 bed mix and will probably replace one. This HAS been my worst year; each year of the last 7 I saw an uptick in both tanners and sales, not this year. I don't know if it's the economy, the passage of the laws, or just the future peeking in.....The hardest sell this year was lotion, and my prices are exceptionally reasonable. I did stop Google Ad Words and focused on Social media more, so that needs to be reevaluated as well. Just my thoughts.

I call your last point, building relationships. Which helps people spend.

I haven't been to Nashville in 10 years, and this is my 21st year in the business. There really isn't anything there to see. And what I do see there just ****** me off. Lotion manufacturers hocking their new lotions to salons, then telling you all of the things that they are doing to prevent online sales, knowing that the stuff is already being sold on it. Manufacturers pushing 35k beds and spray booths that 98% of salon owners cannot afford. Just going reminds of everything that is wrong with the industry. The only good reason to go is to see the sites of Nashville.

They could save a lot of money and just hold a private show for the owners of PBT, STC and Zoom. They really don't care about the rest of us anyway. (except our money)

If they don't care about the rest of us, why are they still sending trainers to the smallest of salons across the US? They do care!!!!!

Salons that are properly structured have had a great year. With most operators coming to this forum for assistance because their numbers are declining, this is not the place for that kind of poll. The majority of successful operators are too busy running their salons to visit tanning forums. This has been an excellent year for tanning. Those salons that are struggling must make appropriate changes or the decline in sales will not change. Asking struggling salon owners how is business is always going to get a negative response. Ask successful salon owners how business is and you will get a positive answer.

If this is not the case, do something about it."

It HAS not and will NOT be a profitable business for the smaller salons...only the major players/multi-chain operators have a chance of survival..and I question their longevity 5 years from now. This industry, as Dogfan stated, "is in a death spiral."
You are wrong, an independent operator can be successful. This year across the board my clients are all showing increases over 2013 and in 2013 increases over 2012.

Have a great product and market your salon with all media available to you and you will be successful.

If your salon is rundown, looks old, if your staff is not properly trained, if your price structure does not get the most out of your equipment mix and you are not constantly advertising you are likely to show decreases.

I get calls from salon owners every week that describe their business model and salon to me and I am surprised they are still in business. This can't be blamed on a struggling industry. When you look at the salons that are listed on CL, in most cases they are not sell-able businesses because the are so poorly structured.

In is so frustrating to only hear about failing salons when so much can be done to change that trend.

I spoke to an operator today that has 5 Klaufsun Cosmos and has been in business for over 20 years, does no advertising and can't understand what has happened to tanning. This is just a snapshot of this salon but it represents a huge segment of the industry.

True, your salon may never be successful because you are unwilling to admit you just don't know what you are doing.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE TANNERS, how you reach and capture them is always changing. You must always be in front of change instead of fighting it.

It would actually be best if those salons that are not doing well and unwilling to change, simply close and get a job. For those that have invested everything in their business and want to succeed, they owe it to themselves to exhaust every opportunity to turn that investment around instead of complaining.

The lowest increase I have seen for 2014 is 8%
There is so much that can be done.
