That however, will probably not occur in time to save much of the indoor tanning industry. | |

Rep Power: 26 | Re: Surgeon General's Report The following information will show how "ignorant" the anti-tanning folks (including the Acting Surgeon General) really are. The report stated that: 1. Limited exposure to UV radiation, as used in this document, refers to very brief (5–15 minute) outdoor exposures received during the course of daily activities or exposures at very low UV Index levels (2 or less). For most people, the risk of skin cancer from such limited, incidental UV exposure is likely low. 2. Although all UV exposures can affect skin cancer risk, entirely avoiding UV rays from the sun is neither realistic nor advisable for most Americans. Spending time outdoors is associated with positive health benefits, such as increased levels of physical activity and improved mental health. Here are some facts about UVI 2 sunlight: 1. To deliver a UVR dose of 1.0 MED (i.e, the dose that will cause a detectable sunburn) it takes 68 minutes (FDA EAS) but 120 minutes (2 hours) using the CIE EAS (i.e., the action spectrum used to determine sunscreen efficacy). 2. Te deliver a UVR dose sufficient to stimulate the production of facultative pigmentation (a "tan") it takes 100 minutes. 3. To deliver a UVR dose sufficient to stimulate the "equivalent" of a 1,000 IU vitamin D supplement 1,000 minutes of face, hands and arm exposure (remember, that is all the derm's want exposed). Using the CIE EAS) it would take 2 hours to develop a faint pink sunburn and a slight increase in facultative pigmentation but the "bad news" is almost no vitamin D would be stimulated in 2 hours.
